What trades has he made that have been bad besides maybe the Vey deal? His drafting so far looks pretty good... If your going to blame anyone start blaming the owner. He axed Gillis when Gilkis wanted to rebuild and I'm pretty sure he's not wanting Benning to sell off assets even if it's good for the long term. Crabcakes
10 hours ago, J.R. said: I'm guessing he really meant "revise". Or at the very least, 'here's the plan moving forward from now'. I don't think for a second that they were simply sitting on their hands watching them with no guidance or plan since training camp. Absolutely. You make plans, set a course of action and see how it goes. At a certain point, you review and make adjustments to your plans based on how things have gone. Obviously, McCann has been wearing down and does poorly in situations where he needs to be stronger (such as face offs and 1 on 1 battles). I gather that they plan on giving him periodic rest together with strength training and study. I'm not sure what they will be doing with Virtanen. His strengths are his physical game, speed and a good shot. We haven't been seeing a lot of his speed or shot. His production is off. Maybe he's having fitness or weight issues. I expect a similar course of action (tailored to his specific case) will be taken. I expect that Vey is staying up to cover them when McCann and Virtanen are not playing. They have had Cole Cassels on a program due to his injury issues after his Mem Cup run. He was unable to train properly over the summer so he was put on a program consisting of training and playing. I can only think that they have been happy with this approach and are trying out something similar on McCann and Virtanen.
Ghostsof1915
Not every player has the same devolopment path. To say Virtanen doesn't have hockey IQ is as unfounded as folks saying Kassian has a great hockey IQ. The issue really is Virt won't get help in Calgary. And he's unable to play in Utica. I have my doubts with Willie, when he has players with skill playing w Dorsett. What do you mean? Turned McCann into what? He's a 24th overall playing in the NHL at 19 lol he sucks at draws but so do almost all young centres.

Kassian great hockey IQ? Don't' think any educated hockey fan said that. Actually it was the opposite of that. Kas couldn't figure out where to be on the ice, that's why he was in the doghouse of every coach on Vancouver. That and his off ice issues but he was given opportunities but just couldn't process the game at a high level. But generally power forwards and Dmen take longer to develop. Virtanen will be fine in 3 or 4 years if he's developed properly. It's a proces.
Fizzure
I think it more of a situation where they feel his offensive talents will take care of themselves. He need's to think the NHL game, a point hes not at yet. I think they feel that once hes finally up to speed at the NHL level that his skill will take over from there. Scoring 250 goals in the WHL might sure look nice on paper but I highly doubt that will help him think the NHL game, which is pretty obvious what he needs to work on. He needs to work on his maturity as well and I think being around guys like Hank and Dank will go a lot further than being around a bunch of other kids who probably have their own maturity isses.

Good post. I think that is a huge part of it. Jake will end up being a leader eventually but right now he needs guys like the sedins, burrows, Prust ect to get him acting like a pro mentally and physically. The hitmen aren't going to be able to do that. He will get more ice there but at least he can be monitored and trained here.

To take it a step further I would say is he needs to be in the AHL. But he cant and the big club is probably the next best thing.

Popular Post theminister
I think a fair comparison for Jake's upside, and a cautionary tale, would be Shane Doan. Similar in most respects at the time of their drafting. Born in 1976, drafted in 1995 at 7th overall, he didn't make his mark on the scoresheet until the '99-00 season when he was 23-24. Perfect comparison. Sure we would love him to turn into an Iginla who just hit his 600 career goal mark. However the realistic expectation should be a Shane Doan type player. Who is a great & loyal contributor for the organization. Consistent in effort & production. The prototypical Power-forward who eases his way into the league. (See above, 17/12/11 points in first 3 seasons) This does not show him as a bust. It shows how he worked his way up the line-up to be a physical imposing force who learns the league & gains scoring touch. If he can be a second liner 20-30 goal scorer after age 25 until he is 40, then we should be so lucky.
