TheRussianRocket.
@reporterchris: Erik Johnson has agreed to an extension with the #avs. He could have become a UFA after this season. @DarrenDreger: The Colorado Avalanche and Erik Johnson are closing in on a long term contract extension. Nuxfanabroad
This bloke another Roman Hamrlik/Chris Phillips? Or is he the real deal?(seems risky using a top pick on D)...
-AJ-
He's become a great player. I remember when I used to consider him a bust.
Guest
This bloke another Roman Hamrlik/Chris Phillips? Or is he the real deal?(seems risky using a top pick on D)... Both Hamrlik and Phillips had good careers - not franchise D, but they weren't Patrik Stefans. Wonder what the number is. Anything below $5.5m would be good for the Avs.

TOMapleLaughs
It will be 6-7mil per. At this rate 'franchise' defensemen of any ability will be getting paid a similar deal because there are open spots available on every team. While there are only 2-5 legit 'franchise' defensemen in the NHL, up to 60 will be paid as much as one, and teams will be glad to pay the rate due to the fear of losing their precious 'franchise' defenseman. That being said, you can do worse than Erik Johnson. You can see the importance of drafting one becoming more clear year after year. Effective UFA's are as scarce as ever and trades that go to help Canadian teams are rare.
oldnews
This bloke another Roman Hamrlik/Chris Phillips? oldnews
There aren't many huge, two-way, right handed D like Johnson that are as mobile, skilled, and play the balanced game that he does. He is a core piece of their future and is worth the top pairing money he'll undoubtedly get.
Coconuts
He's no Drew Doughty but he still brings a lot to the table, he's got a pretty balanced game and some good size. The AVs weren't gonna let him go for nothing, and even if they were to trade him finding a top tier D is quite the undertaking nowadays if you don't draft one yourself. He'll be a good piece of their core, I'm just wondering what the actual deal looks like.

Intoewsables
7 years, $6M per. Term seems a bit long IMO but not surprising. edit: The price seems fair though.
