[Signing] Devils re-sign F Kyle Palmieri [5 year x $4.65M AAV]

Recommended Posts

Seems like he shouldve had a bridge contract here.  One year with a raise before term kicked in.  He got talent and was somewhat buried in Anaheim.  Definitely made the most of his year in NJ, and maybe theyre betting that hell possibly score more with Hall as the other winger on that line, so term here could actually end up saving them money if he were able to score 30 again.

The Devils are not as bad as people think they are. Their defense core is actually quite solid, and they are all quite young (except Greene), they have some terrific prospects in the pipeline, and easily one of the best goalies in the NHL.

They started off the 2015 season poorly, but finished very, very strong. Would not be surprised if they made the playoffs next year.

I think last season people thought they were a dark horse since they could be a team that scores on committee.

It's a shame the team lost Kolvachuck and Parise for nothing trading them for assets could have made them a better team moving forward.

Kovalchuk was a bit of an odd situation which culminated in a perfect storm for both him and the Devils. He wanted to go back to Russia and they couldn't afford his salary anymore. Kovalchuk did them an enormous favor by going to the KHL. While it certainly would have been better for them to get some sort of asset for him, considering he retired and they aren't on the books for his cap or salary, nobody would have given them anything anyway.

Parise was unfortunate for them. While there certainly were signs that he was going to head to Minnesota to be home, the Devils made a run to the Stanley Cup Final in the final year of his deal. So while it would have been nice for them to trade him at the deadline, they wouldn't have made that run in the playoffs for the much needed playoff revenue that New Jersey sorely needs keep afloat.

Any team with Schneider in net has to be a dark horse. Palmieri had a fine season, and looks set on that Devils top line for years to come. With Hall coming in, Zacha looking good, and players like Henrique, DSP, Zajac and Cammalleri, they have some scoring there that could keep them in the hunt for the playoffs.

They are buying UFA years.  It's not bridge time.

Their problem before was definitely scoring. Even if they've gotten weaker on D (losing Larsson as a big minute shut down D will do that) they've been working on adding goal support for Schneider.

This is a bit rich a bit soon for Palmieri perhaps, but we'll see if it pays off. Hopefully he doesn't become the next Clarkson signing.

Good for him after a career year, he'll just need to hope his shooting % is sustainable.

Now his % isn't as high as some other scorers out there (Adam Henrique had a 20% success rate) but good luck to Kyle, that he wouldn't slump after this big contract.  His career average is around 12%, so even if he had a similar shot production but he wasn't as lucky he could still be a 26-goal scorer which isn't bad for $4.65 million.  With Hall around that should also bolster an emerging offensive group that also boasts Henrique, Cammalleri, Zajac and Zacha, for starters.

Larsson was the Devils best D-man on an already somewhat suspect D-core.

Schneider is gonna have his work cut out for him this season.

Greene or Larsson, either one they lost a key part of their already horrible D. Not to mention Schlemko who led the D in PP time.

Not to mention, do the Devils even have 6 defenseman when healthy? lol

General Manager Ray Shero attempted to lessen the blow of the trade by signing Ben Lovejoy when free agency opened.  Even with Lovejoy in the fold, the Devils still could use a defenseman on their roster to start next season as our only known quantities are Lovejoy, Andy GreeneDamon Seversonand John Moore since Jon Merrill may or may not be available until the season is underway due to a recent surgery.

That gives us four defensemen with two playing on each side meaning that we will need at least 2 blue liners to ice a full lineup; the Devils could choose to fill both slots internally, look to sign multiple remaining free agents, or a combination of both.  I honestly think it will be a combination of both since the team will carry 7 defensemen total during the season, and I could see them signing a player and offering a PTO to another.  Let's take a look at who I think would be good internal and external candidates for each side of the ice:
