(Discussion)  What type of player should be targeted to play with the Sedins?

Vrbata and Erickson have not worked.

You’ve all watched the Sedins for a long time.  In your opinion what player is best suited to play with the Sedins and who should the Canucks target in a trade to get said type of player.

I don’t believe the Sedins need a 6 million dollar type of player to play on their line and be effective… I think a young cheap hardworking sniper type player would be best.   Like a young Burrows type, the Sedins made him a superstar and I believe history can repeat itself… Can’t Benning scout this type of player on another teams roster and trade for him.

Any suggestions for who the Canucks could trade for to play with the Sedins?

The fact remains that whoever plays with the Sedin's will not reach 60+ points because they use the board game so often between each other, and don't always trust their teammate to keep the cycle going. Eriksson has been perfect with them. That line works hard every shift, can keep the cycle going, and compliment each other so well.

It's not a knock on the Sedin's... but it hardly matters who plays with them... they are going to get their points regardless

We are about 3-4 seasons past that now. They can still play hockey but we need to focus on more important items. The sedins have been the centerpiece to this franchise but we cant rely on them game after game now. Let them play. If they don't put up 50 to 60 points so be it. We need to get the young guys scoring now

vrbata didn't work because he just got open so they could pass to him. burrows ericksson, and hansen were good because, they allowed the sedins to play their game and just get in front of the next or join them on the cycle. they are also good defensively.  whether it's ericksson or hansen, their offense will come. i hope ericksson plays with them, because hansen and sutter play so well together. when rodin is playing, i'ld like to see granlund, horvat and rodin together.  maybe eventually, virtanen will play left wing with sutter and hansen . that's a swift line. i see baertschi as the odd man out. but what do i know.

How about a player on another team?

Boeser.

But really, we won't be trading any significant assets to go after someone else to play with the Sedins when we have plenty of players here. Eriksson will be with them while Hansen's out, then they'll make the decision whether to move Hansen back or keep Eriksson there. They also have the option of moving Granlund to center and putting Sutter with the twins (or Granlund for that matter) or giving a young guy a chance (Baertschi's been tried there, Virtanen could be, etc.).

There are so many options that trading for someone mediocre to avoid paying big is way far down on the list. No team is going to hand is a life raft in a young star player so it is what it is.

Hard to say since chemistry is totally unpredictable.
I'd say a possession guy. A guy who could keep the puck in the zone as a battler around the boards and in the corners. Someone who isn't blazingly fast, but shifty. Someone who goes hard to the net consistently. And a guy who's not afraid to drop 'em for his linemates.
I'd probably guess a Wayne Simmonds would be the perfect fit.

Friedman in his 30 thoughts as to why it might not be quite ideal.

9. One of the reasons the Canucks haven’t used Eriksson with the Sedins too often? With Daniel and Henrik down low, you’re playing with fire by having a third forward in that area, since the responsibility is to stay higher and protect against odd-man rushes. But Eriksson likes to play in front of the net, so he’s not able to go where he’s comfortable. At some point, Vancouver is going to have to commit to a long run of trying to make it work, but it’s hard to do that when you need wins.

it doesn't matter at this point. by the time this team is good, the sedins will be retired

Have to disagree.   Canucks are looking good in Goal and Defense.

Benning has said he wants to pick up a proven 20 goal scorer…. Next to impossible to do though.

BUT…. If you can trade for the young unproven sniper type of player that can play with the Sedins… Benning has been scouting the draft for years… I’m sure he can find or already knows about some young player on another team that he believes could work with the Sedins…    some player buried on the depth chart…   Target a player like that and make the trade…  the cost won’t be that much as the player is unproven… sure it’s a gamble… but why not???

Then you can move Eriksson down in the lineup to get your 20 added goals.

Boom..  Playoffs?

Your question is MOOT

Its almost  almost  like knowing we must have to put up with that mini-Mussolini down south for at least 4 years. And like that election, we also have no say in the matter of Canuck hockey decisions. We have to accept the fact that the Canucks management once again, against all historical indications on the ice, have already committed to a misguided notion that they just have to spend  a lot of money on another high priced soft Swede and that line will be good to go, and lock him up for 6 years.  Even though the most productive the Sedins have ever been in this franchise is with Burrows, and later with Hansen. You answered your own question, you are correct, what they need(ed) is a younger version of Burrows, the same hockey smarts but with maybe even more goal scoring upside, but crucially to make that line work he has to be gritty and fast, to compliment the Sedins who are not so much.

But do you think JB would ever give up this early on the 3 swedes line? Besides no one would take on that contract now. And they still may come together and mesh better as Eriksson gets more comfortable here. As a fan, I sure hope they do. Otherwise this is JB's "Luongo (my contract sucks) deal". They did not agree to pay Eriksson 36 million to be a defensive specialist. So they will try and try to make that line work, and then a new coach will come in and try and try with renewed vigor. I really hope it works eventually, for the sake of the team, and us fans. But I think what will happen between stints with Sedins that may be good for a game or two and then sour enough that Eriksson is switched out with another tryout until they, like what happened with Burrows, luckily stumble upon some young gritty fast and smart player that gets how to play with the Sedins. That he's not a star player on the line, he's there to make them look good. And when that happens, Eriksson we hope, will not throw a Vrbata snit and be happy to play on the second line. But like I said, I'd be happy to have him prove me wrong and the triple S line works (Soft Swedish Sedin line)
