I don't buy JB anymore. looking at how prospects from other teams compare to what we have,  it's insane how we manage to take the least of them. Nylander, Konecny, Tkachuk could have instantly turned our team around, they were expected to be the best player too.

Just hoping for JB to not be like the past drafts and  pick somebody like he sees something that nobody doesn't.

Why even mention konecny when we got a stud that would go even higher in a re-draft.

Most fans seem to think the draft is a fairly easy task and have no idea how hard it is to look and study an 18 year old and try to figure out if he can mature into an NHL player.

That's why you take the bpa and hope for the best

On whose word is the BPA though. Yourself, your team scouts, ISS, CSS, Bob Mckenzie (lol). This is how guys like Sakic get passed over and drafted at 15 spot. It is such a crap shoot with ten thousand opinions on who is "the one".

BPA is what you draft when you have a clean slate.  And who has that?  Even George McPhee won't have a clean slate come draft time.

What's a BPA?  Really?  I know, best player available, but at what?  Speed, IQ, Shot, Puck Skills, Character, whatever.....the skill that you like the most, and think is most important, is not what the next guy thinks necessarily.

What about your team?  What are you trying to build and what pieces do you have in place already.

Drafting BPA is the right mindset but in reality, it's pretty hard to define and it's pretty hard to actually do.  And the GM who is hoping for the best is a damn fool.  They all have a plan and they're working towards it unless they are overwhelmed and over their heads like GMMG became

Well, you want skills etc too.  But above all you want a guy who doesn't think that playing in the NHL is an arrival.  You want a guy like Bo Horvat, or the Sedins who work at their skills and fitness their whole careers.  It's the journey (process) above the end point because there is no end point.

Benning is on the record now that with 2014 they knew they were passing up high end skill to draft the vaunted power forward that is 'hard to find'.

Time for the Boston model and the age gap nonsense to die. We needed to move past 2011 three years ago

To be fair, Boston isn't the only team to utilize a power forward.

This Nylander/Ehlers/Tkachuk bs is so tiring. Juolevi is going to be a solid 2 way defenceman who will be able to eat solid minutes. Yes Benning missed when he picked Jake but Jake is learning a lot in utica even though it dosent translate on the scoresheet some nights he can be their best player next to demko. Even if Jake turns into a 15-20 goal scorer id be content because with pick #6 you aren't exactly expecting franchise talent.

it's a tad more objective than you make out

was mcdavid the best player available when he was drafted ? (and was there any dispute at all about this?)

why ?

so now apply that to each player in the upcoming draft

there is a reason why players can be ranked

it's not an exact science

which is why there is always debate about the ranking

but generally we can say who the top 5 are

the next 5

the next 10

after than it kinda blurs more

I feel like If Benning trades a d-man It will be Ben Hutton. Why? We know he won't/can't trade Edler/Tanev, The Gudbranson deal would look horrible and a waste. Plus Guddy only got maybe 30 games this season hard to see what we have. He won't trade his future Chara, Tryamkin. And Stecher is a smaller d-man and is from here and it would look bad if a home town kid signed here as a free agent and then is traded. As much as I like Hutty and want him here he is on the outs. Pus other teams would love a 6'3 PMD 23 years of age. He'd probably put up 35/40+points with a decent offensive in front of him

This year they're 6.0 + 1.55 = 7.55 in goal

Marky is already on the books at a $3.8M cap hit for next year.  How high do they want to go?  Because they also have to sign Horvat, Tryamkin, and Megna

Guess he'll be a megnamillionaire, no?:o
