Jim Benning on TSN 1040

Summary:

"He was real sick but he's ready to play. I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do. He's a skilled player" - Benning on Goldobin

"Biega has been good at forward. He gets in on the forecheck. He crashes and bangs" - Benning

"Utica is fighting for a playoff spot. We want to leave some kids down there. We think it's important they play meaningful games" - Benning

"His wrist, the last couple weeks, started bothering him bad. If he kept playing, he could have done more damage" - Benning on Granlund

"Jordan's a big part of that team. He's on the power play and scores from the blueline. We'd like him to play down there" - Benning on Subban

"He's using his body position, stick better. He needs to keep working on his defensive play to be an NHL player" - Benning on Subban

"We haven't talked to his agent yet. We'll wait to the end of the year and figure it out" - Benning on Tryamkin

"For most part, shots are from the outside. We've been protecting middle of the ice pretty good, limiting 2nd/3rd opportunities" - Benning on defence

"That's not part of the players makeup, not part of the coaches makeup. But with all the injuries, that could happen" - Benning on losing games

"Our young players have stepped it up and we're going to have more young skilled players join, we need them to take over the scoring" - Benning

"That's a position we have depth at. We'll look at trade market and if we can switch a D for a good young forward, we may look" - Benning on defence

"Eriksson may be back next week. Gaunce still week-to-week. Gudbranson hoping to be back last week, but unsure" - Benning

"He's sick this week and we're hoping he'll be ready for our home stretch" - Benning on Markstrom

"If things don't work out with Ryan (Miller), and he's our #1 goalie, I have confidence in him" - Benning on Markstrom

"There's some real good players (after Patrick, Hischier), I feel confident we're going to get another real good player" - Benning on draft

"We haven't got that far yet. We'll finish the year and talk to Ryan and his agent and go from there" - Benning on Miller 1-year or 2-year deal

We'll look at trade market and if we can switch a D for a good young forward, we may look" - Benning on D

Seems like we have a good opportunity to see something happen on this front, with the number of trade points coming up pre-expansion, draft day and then once the dust settles in the summer.

Not sure that CDC ever lets the dust settle?  I kid of course :)

If Quads can't come back until the last week imo they should just shut him down - what good can come from sending out a physical type guy who's lost the last several months, out against guys in absolutely prime playoff conditioning and possibly playing meaningful games for their teams at that point in the season when ours is a write-off?

Looking forward to the offseason and whether Benning can strike another mega deal involving a defenceman with the depth we have in that position. Hopefully another young player with star potential. Also I agree with Benning on Subban. He's been good in the offensive side but could still use some improvement defending his own end. Looking forward to seeing Marky back down the stretch and Gaunce also and finishing the season on a high note. Go Benning!

Reluctantly have to agree PB.   Why throw a guy with Quads' competitiveness out there with competition that's in playoff mode?  Best case vs worst case here then logic says shut'em down and focus on off season training.

Draft day could be interesting as usual.  Expansion day should be interesting too.  Very curious to see what our new division rival will start out like especially if PIT doesn't move Fleury and Murray is available.  They may live to regret holding on to him for the playoffs if there are no takers after.

Not sure how Benning will get a high scoring forward by trading a defenseman ( unless a package with maybe Tanev works for somebody) but he could pinch a twenty goal scorer somewhere no problem which would help the forward group.

Cant wait till draft day...!

Tanev or Hutton + Baer should get you a pretty damn good player.

I think "good young forward" is Jim-code for prospect with potential (like Goldy) , but we'll see.

When asked if he was going to watch Boeser play live on Friday he said no....he said that he was going to watch a USHL game ....Mittelstadt perhaps?

JB is definitely going to draft elite skilled forwards these next two drafts.  Middlestadt, Alf predicts, will be the most elite of this draft.

Curious... why is that? Not disputing, just wondering.

I thought mittelstadt played for his high school team still.  Or I could be wrong
