Though there's already people saying he should be suspended for a long time and some suggest this being borderline assault. If this happened to one of our players I'm sure people would be downright livid and would want Rinaldo to be suspendedThere was a whole twitter brawl between fans, former players, and analysts about this incident and many of them agree that what Rinaldo did was predatory like.

The problem here is that Rinaldo is a serious repeat offender, he was even simultaneously suspended from the NHL AND AHL at one point.

According to Craig Morgan on NHL.com, Rinaldo is currently suspended indefinitely. No reports on a hearing yet but he's suspended indefinitely. Need someone higher than him to confirm this.

Rinaldo got a match penalty and that's an automatic suspension until the league reviews the play.

From the NHL rule book:

Rule 21 – Match Penalties

21.1 Match Penalty - A match penalty involves the suspension of a player for the balance of the game and the offender shall be ordered to the dressing room immediately.

A match penalty shall be imposed on any player who deliberately attempts to injure or who deliberately injures an opponent in any manner.

21.2  Short-handed - A substitute player is permitted to replace the penalized player after five (5) minutes playing time has elapsed.

The match penalty, plus any additional penalties, shall be served by a player (excluding a goalkeeper) to be designated by the Manager or Coach of the offending team through the playing Captain, such player to take his place in the penalty box immediately.

For all match penalties, regardless of when imposed, or prescribed additional penalties, a total of ten minutes shall be charged in the records against the offending player.

In addition to the match penalty, the player shall be automatically suspended from further competition until the Commissioner has ruled on the issue. See also Rule 28 – Supplementary Discipline.

Is this the main difference between a match penalty and a game misconduct? I was trying to look it up online after it happened but the sites I saw said they were the same thing.

Match penalty automatically comes with a 1 game suspension IIRC

Could be wrong

It takes three game misconducts to have an automatic one game suspension - it increases after each additional game misconduct.  Dorsett had two and Canucks tried unsuccessfully to have his 2nd one rescinded.  Match penalty is when there is intent to injure another player.

This is the NHL rule book for this season - it's article 23 on page 32.  http://www.nhl.com/nhl/en/v3/ext/rules/2017-2018-NHL-rulebook.pdf

I was watching the game as it happened and feel like I'm the only person who didn't see anything wrong. Rinaldo's hit on Mackinnon was clean, and Girard changed direction specifically to skate at Rinaldo and shove him up high. I'm not sure what he was expecting skating up to him like that right after a big hit, but to me the result wasn't surprising.

If he was gonna go out of his way to skate up like that he should've already had his gloves off, or at least dropped his stick.

I agree, it wasn't really a sucker punch in the way Rinaldo sneaked up on the guy and punched him. Girard skates at Rinaldo and physically engages him. Rinaldo was too quick to throw a punch but can't blame him for thinking that a fight is coming.

This! x100!!! I don't know if I'm getting old but this new NHL is getting way too soft for me.

Rinaldo's an ass, but this is him reacting to Girard coming in after a hit. If the NHL didn't have the mentality to jump a guy after every big hit, Rinaldo wouldn't have been one edge waiting for someone to jump him. You could see him looking around right away (sign enough he knows he's a crap disturber of course). Once Girard cuts into him and gives him a shove, Rinaldo has to think something's on, and he reacted. He reacted poorly and went straight to the punch after dropping his gloves when Girard hadn't followed up the initial shove, so that and his history does deserve something, but it's far less of an issue than it's made out to be.

I accidentally clicked yes.

zac is pos without a doubt and he has done variations of this before but...........

dont approach a guy, like zac, in this situation, without your gloves off or your stick raised in a cross check at throat level.

Poor kid learned a lesson I guess.
