Popular Post smokes
https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/canucks-prospect-jett-woo-scoring Canucks defence prospect Jett Woo beginning to pile up points in WHL The crowd at the Langley Events Centre erupted after the first goal of the game on Saturday night. But the home team hadn’t scored. No, it wasn’t a Vancouver Giants goal, rather it was one from Canucks prospect Jett Woo, playing for the Moose Jaw Warriors. Jett Woo (@Jett_Woo) puts the Warriors up 1-0! Lots of @Canucks fans cheering in Langley. pic.twitter.com/6qkBM3nbPU — Moose Jaw Warriors (@MJWARRIORS) January 20, 2019 The host Giants ended up tying things up and went on to win 2-1 in overtime, but the main takeaway for many in the building after this game was the play of 18-year-old defenceman. The Canucks selected the 6-foot, 200-pound blueliner 37th overall, in the second round of the 2018 NHL Draft. At the time, he was seen as more of a defensive specialist, with the penchant for laying big hits to unsuspecting victims. Jett Woo (@Jett_Woo) holding his ground. pic.twitter.com/A5PukPy7Qg — Moose Jaw Warriors (@MJWARRIORS) October 13, 2018 The hits are still coming for Woo – it only took him just 25 seconds to lay his first hit on Saturday – but what has accompanied is point production, making him even more intriguing of a prospect than a year ago. In his draft year, Woo produced 0.57 points-per-game. That isn’t an impressive number, but it’s one that was likely diminished due to injuries. Woo suffered a separated shoulder 18 game into last season, missing six weeks of action. Shortly after returning to the lineup, he was sidelined for nearly a month with a strained oblique muscle and hip pointer. It may have been a blessing in disguise for the Canucks, as he was producing at a 0.76 point-per-game clip before he got banged up, which helped him slip into the second round. That pick is looking better and better by the day, as Woo has turned it up after a slow start to this season and is hovering around point-per-game territory – now at 38 points in 39 games. That pace puts him ahead of other notable WHL alumni in their draft +1 seasons, such as Morgan Reilly, Travis Hamonic, and Matthew Dumba. Was looking at previous defenders to play for the Moose Jaw Warriors and their stats and found this: Travis Hamonic WHL PPG in D+1 season (2008-2009): 0.70 Morgan Reilly WHL PPG in D+1 season (2012-2013): 0.9 Jett Woo WHL PPG in D+1 season so far (2018-2019): 1.03#Canucks — Tarunsir (@TarunistYT) January 1, 2019 Woo’s pace really saw a spike the day after being left off Team Canada’s World Junior camp roster in early December, a team also coached by his junior coach, Tim Hunter. He had a goal and three assists in the Warriors’ next game, and has put up 22 points in 18 games since the snub. He’s now among the highest-scoring defencemen in the WHL, ranking seventh in total points this season. Of the six players with more points, only 2019-draft eligible Bowen Byram is younger than Woo. All of this certainly bodes well for Woo’s chances of making the transition to the pro ranks when the time comes, especially when you remember that offence isn’t the main calling card to Woo’s game. It’s this: Jett Woo (@Jett_Woo) with a massive hit in the @cibc #CANvsRUS Series. pic.twitter.com/tm87VTIzmu — Moose Jaw Warriors (@MJWARRIORS) November 6, 2018 For as polished as Woo can look at times, he’s still just 18 years old and – if he doesn’t make the Canucks out of camp next fall – will have one more season in Moose Jaw to refine his skills before making the transition to pro. He’ll be a strong candidate to make Canada’s World Junior team too. That would likely be for the best, although between his amazing name, electrifying body checks, and the Canucks’ total lack of right-handed defencemen in the pipeline, it might be hard for fans to wait that long. 3

Podzilla
All the negatives I’ve heard about Bouchard’s game showed in the WJ’s when I watched him . I don’t see him ever being a top pairing d-man in the NHL. Big part of that is his skating. I really hope Woo can become a solid top 4 d. He’s tracking well. RetroCanuck
Woo looks so good this year! Doubt he's able to make the jump next year but I can see him sticking around in training camp and then taking a spot a couple years down the road. Huge hopes for this kid considering his current projections and how much we need a guy like him right now. Dream scenario is that he turns into a minimum top 4 but hopefully top 2 D. Hughes-Woo Juolevi-Seider (pick aquired in a Sutter, Guddy or Edler trade) Hutton-Stecher An elite 3 pairs that can help us win our cup in 2021-22! Good stuff One thing I noticed is that he often wont go deep into the zone to provide his offence, but gets his shots through from the point which ends up as a goal or an assist. This keeps him in a position to defend while keeping the puck deep and still contributing to offense. Good two-way play from him. Also a good complimentary to Hughes who often rushes up from the point and attacks the net.

What I am not certain of is if he will have a really good NHL career due to his wheels. To the point, yes Bouchard is miles from NHL ready but of course so is Woo miles away and even further than Bouchard. Woo will be at least three more years in the oven. IF the next braintrust in Edmonton has any sense, they will let Bouchard have at least a full AHL season or two to get a sense of the pro game speed. Woo will be WHL for at least one more year and then likely two in AHL. Woo is also not a first round touted pick. Bouchard was a reasonable pick for Edmonton trying to replace the concept of Justin Schultz but they should have picked Smith or Dobson if they wanted more instant gratification. I foresee another year in junior plus 2 years in the AHL for Woo. Should be fun watching him develop. Skating was definitely a red flag RE Bouchard. Dobson would've been a better choice in my opinion. Can't really comment on Smith as I haven't seen him play but from what I understand he would've been a good choice too. In any event, I'm sure Bouchard will be a very good defensemen for Edmonton provided they take the time to develop him properly.

Popular Post Rob_Zepp
Canucks prospects tracker: Woo a road warrior on western trip Canucks prospects tracker: Woo a road warrior on western trip Moose Jaw Warriors defenceman Jett Woo led the way on the team's 6-0-1 road trip through B.C. and Alberta. Gerry Kahrmann / PNG It’s the latest edition of the weekly tracker, where we tally up the efforts of the Vancouver Canucks’ highest-profile prospects: Jett Woo Five games: Five points on three goals and two assists. One heck of a road trip for the Canucks’ 2018 second-rounder. The Moose Jaw Warriors wrapped up the B.C. leg of their lengthy western swing on Tuesday the way they started it: with a win — and a Woo goal. In a 3-2 overtime triumph for Moose Jaw in Prince George, Woo netted his 10th of the season, a new career high. And it was a beauty. With the Warriors down 2-1, Woo picked up a pass at the Cougars’ blue line, made a move toward the top of the faceoff circle and wired a high, heavy wrist shot over the goalie’s blocker side. Sign this kid, he's having a great season for Moose Jaw. #Canucks 273 6:18 AM - Jan 23, 2019 Twitter Ads info and privacy 31 people are talking about this On Friday, Woo kept it up with an assist in a 5-2 win at the Edmonton Oil Kings. He finished the game a plus-2 and was named the second star. Then on Saturday, Woo had another assist in a 3-1 win in Medicine Hat to extend his point streak to four games. He also had two shots on net and a plus-2 rating. The Warriors finished their seven-game road trip with a sparkling 6-0-1 record. What Woo’s showing this season is an offensive upside that may be higher than previously thought. The 6-foot, 203-pounder was drafted for his size, strength and smart defensive game; the heir apparent to Erik Gudbranson, if you will, on a suspect list of incoming right-side Canucks defensive prospects. But with Woo’s blossoming offensive game, anything is possible. He’s surpassed last year’s goal total with 22 games still left in the season, and crushed last year’s points total long ago Woo’s 41 points in 42 games is now the sixth-best points total among WHL defencemen. He had 25 points in 44 games last season. The 18-year-old’s progression bodes well for his expected jump from junior hockey after next season — he still has his 19-year-old season to go in the 2019-20 campaign. Ubik@UbikWintermute Jett Woo is going to make it tough on Management to send him back to Junior next season. He has the build of an NHLer, already. Podzilla
Woo is another guy affected by the age rule for the AHL imo. Already has an NHL build, good defensive game, and is now ppg in the dub. Not a lot more for him to do in jr....Putting up similar ppg to Virtanen and Juolevi in their draft +

We brought in so many guys to Utica this year that some of our prospects are playing small minutes, getting scratched or even shipped out overseas. If Woo spends another year in the WHL playing 25+ minutes a night in every situation I can’t really see that hurting him in the long run. That may have actually helped Virtanen if we just left him down that year. 1

I think that with all the turnover coming on the Canucks' blue line, and with several of our D barely treading the 6/7 waters, Woo could surprise everyone and make the team out of camp next season.

That is exactly what pro coaches love - it speaks to a very steady, highly focused style - coaches delight.

They either make the starting 6 or they're back to their respective developmental leagues.

I'm definitely coming from a very conservative POV. However, with our lack of depth on the right side, it's a good possibility that Woo can surprise and go beyond 9 games next year as well. My concern is whether or not he's being rushed a la Virtanen and McCann in 2015. One way to find out though, right?
