[RUMOUR] Canucks looking to offer-sheet Mitch Marner

Recommended Posts

First topic, so take er easy. Came across this today on the interwebs and noticed there was no topic started for it already.

Take this one with a grain of salt, but interested to see what you guys think it would take if it were at all possible.

Cant just drop a bomb like that...

MILLER - HORVAT - MARNER

FERLAND - PETTERSSON - BOESER

That’s a heck of a top six...

We can’t even offer sheet Marner without our first.

They can.  When multiple picks are from the same round they can be spread over 1 more year than the number of picks owed.  So 4x 1st can be owed over 5 years.  The team can't defer and has to give up the pick if it's available.

Yeah this doesn’t make a lot of sense, but.......

What if there is an agreement where TO offer sheets Boeser and the Canucks offer sheet Marner.  Difference in RFA offer sheet value would be the difference in player value.  B)

Boeser cannot be offer sheeted, he doesnt qualify.

Not true, you need to have four first picks within the next five years to be able to do it.

Having said that, it doesn’t make a ton of sense for us to do it... unless we can recoup most of those picks by trading Boeser away afterwards (we cant afford him and Marner).  If we could get two first rounders and a blue chip prospect for Boeser, that makes the Marner compensation a lot more palatable.

Could be a negotiating ploy in trade talks.  If Toronto wants too much, then threaten to offer sheet him.

This has been talked about in another thread, but trading something like Boeser, Tanev, Dipietro, and a 1st is not an unreasonable deal for either team.  Marner is at a whole other tier of player.  If you could get him locked up for 7 years at $11 million, that is a good deal going forward.
