He should retire. Ferland could get concussed by just throwing a hit or getting hit.

Doesn't need to retire his contract is guaranteed

That really sucks. Sit him for the rest of the season and send him back to Utica for a couple games prior to the playoffs.

Guess we are going in on Simmonds after all...

He needs to sit out the rest of this season and  next season and then maybe he might be okay, maybe.

As far a Simmonds, just promote one of the AHL guys for the rest of the year, Gaudette maybe. He is still a replacement for other injured players this season. Don't sell more of the future for a guy whose game seems to have fallen off a cliff, that happens quite suddenly with a player who played like Simmonds

Very concerning for him, I hope he gets the right advice and takes it.

The right advice is not to fly, less air pressure swells the brain, just a fraction but all precautions should be taken, remember when Demko flew, it extended his symptoms a few weeks.

And then take a long, long time off. Cash the guaranteed 4 years of money and try to relax, 12+mil should help

I said this in another thread a while back and I’m sticking to it. He should hang up his skates. Dude’s young, got a whole life in front of him and risking his health further is just not worth it. We saw some great glimpses of what could have been, but sometimes luck and bad injuries derail a persons promising career in sports. Wish him the best in his future endeavors.

A side note, I’ve been extremely pleased with management of this team since WD left and have made it known, but collectively how they’ve handled Ferland has been awful. Why even play him in Utica this season? What’s the rush? After the 2nd concussion out he needed to be done for the year, why they decided to put him in so soon is a complete mystery to me. And he got reinjured in the game, AGAIN. How many times does a group need to learn a lesson before changing what they’ve been doing? Incredibly frustrating to see and might have ruined a promising career.

This has also gotta be a lesson learned for clubs looking to sign players with concussion history. You just can’t commit unless there is clear evidence that he can do it. Ferland should’ve been signed to a one year league minimum kind of contract to begin with. He had the same issues last year.

I wonder what the cap implications are for ferland’s situation. Can we put him on long term IR and save the money that we signed him to? Let’s forget getting ferland back we need to cut lost and not be trapped by this contract

He goes to Robidas Island, and we save 100% of his cap.  There is nothing to see here.  It’s a win for Furley; he collects all of his contract.  It’s a win fir us.  The cap goes poof.

And it’s a win for the puck bunnies in Vancouver because once the Canucks trade for Wayne Simmonds (3rd rounder) with their newfound cap space, people can start debating as to who has the biggest egg-roll on the team:  Tyler Myers or Wayne Simmonds?

Always was against the length when they signed him due to his history. Now the Canucks will be in a rough spot for the duration of his contract..  sure u save his cap and get to spend it if u put him on LTIR.. but when he comes off of it the  what? You'll have to move or trade players.. theres no guarantee hes willing to go on LTIR permanently so his cap is always going to linger.

Except if he doesn't retire permanently, we have to account for him on our books and assume he will be playing each season... so we can't use that money.  The cap does not go poof either, he goes onto LTIR which still counts towards the cap... it just allows us to exceed that cap.  It will cause problems with ELC bonuses next year.

Poof ... gone.  Do we not get to use his cap space while he’s on Robidas Island?  Yes.

We can use it for the rest of this season (assuming he gets shut down), but unless he decides to retire permanently on his own... we can't sign someone to replace him for next season because we have to assume he comes back.  So, no we don't get to use his LTIR space.  Nor can we use that LTIR space for something like paying Petterson's ELC bonus... so having Ferland on LTIR even next season means it is much more difficult not to push the ELC bonuses into the next year.

We can go over the cap by 10% in the off season.  Furley will not retire.  He deserves that contract, and to cash in all of it.

No, he can be on season opening LTIR ala Clarkson, Hossa, Pronger, etc. You do not have to assume they will come back next season, so long as the Drs sign off that he will be continually injured until after the season starts

That is entirely a different point.

If he doesn’t decide that he is done permanently and keeps rehabbing for a return... you have to leave space for him to come back.  You can’t sign someone to replace him because then you are screwed if he returns.
