Would cost us more for sure. Ekblad would be a beast of an addition to our team, no way they take LE back tho.

Connolly is an interesting name tho, 28 years old, 3years left at 3.5m. If we can't sign Toff and want some insurance we could sign Leivo for cheap and maybe trade for Connolly

Connolly is indeed an interesting name.  He had a decent season with the Caps a couple seasons ago.  I can't see the Canucks dealing Boeser and not re-signing Toffoli though, even if it means the addition of Ekblad.  As much as I like Leivo, if the Canucks do this deal and roll into next season with Connolly and Leivo as their top-6 RWers, then that would be very concerning.  While having Podkolzin and Hoglander incoming helps alleviate some concerns, it would seem like a pretty significant downgrade since we don't really know what we have in those two prospects yet.

I think there will be some trades, that don't necessarily make sense to us, but on a financial aspect they make sense for teams like Florida, Ottawa, Arizona etc Teams who are going to have internal budgets, because of these rough economic times. Where as a team like us is a cap team & can potentially take advantage of that.

Not saying this trade will happen, because it would be a huge win for us. Although Ekblad does get beat to the outside quite a bit & he had a horrendous playoffs.

Zito is not aware of that internal budget.  Friedman in his 31 thoughts:

10. If there was one thing that surprised Florida GM Bill Zito in our conversation, it was that I’d heard Panthers’ ownership wished to cut payroll.

“No one said that me,” he said after a pause. “That’s news to me.”

What is the mandate, then?

“Moving forward as if they had just acquired the franchise. Make the best, most prudent decision you can for the benefit of of the franchise. Not necessarily for tonight, but for the best interests of the franchise. We’re there with you, and we’re gong to support you.”

(One GM said the Panthers have said they don’t want to make ridiculous deals to simply cut cash, that their moves will have “purpose” to them. )

Get rid of him without losing Hoglander, Woo or Pod and I am a happy duck. Guy is abysmal offensively. It's actually depressing how terrible he is with the puck on his stick. If we lose another 1st rounder oh well. Just as long as we don't lose another 2nd rounder on top of it. Lol. Back to back drafts without a 1st or 2nd round pick is not ideal.

Sadly I think Lind may be a fall guy for moving out Eriksson, maybe Virtanen but his contract may be in the 3mil range meaning a team would be taking in nearly 10mil in cap from Eriksson and Virtanen. Depends on if we're the only team that sees top 6 potential in Lind still. Can't see Rathbone being sacrificed. Would look really bad to other potential College players we may draft. I doubt Juolevi has any value to anyone. 1st rounder and Lind to move out Eriksson? He has 2 years left on his contract and unlike Marleau's is buyout proof I am pretty sure. So whatever team trades for him likely has to keep him.

A first and Lind would be the very least. Your first idea of Lind alone would be a joke. Stop acting so confused when it would have to take a Hogs or Pods.

The boys on AM650 were talking about this trade

To Fla: Boeser, Eriksson

To Van: Ekblad, Connolly

Truly based on the cash savings for Florida going forward.

I've been dreaming of Ekblad for a while but don't think it'll ever happen. But to lose Eriksson AND get Ekblad in the same trade and I'd build the a church in JB's name.  I'd trade anyone that's not Petey, Hughes or Horvat.

I heard this on 650 too. Looked him up and has a substantial salary and points aren’t that great. Haven’t followed him much. Is he that good? Does he throw his weight around? Can he fight? Would he be better here?

I haven't followed him closely since the draft but from my understanding his game is in the mold of Shea Weber.  I think he'd be a good partner for Hughes in the long run but maybe some of the more knowledgeable posters can elaborate more or correct my incorrect ideas lol

Eriksson is not the only player who is owed less salary than his AAV and who their respective teams are looking to move.

For example.  Boychuk in NYI has reached healthy scratch territory and they need to clear cap space to extend Barzal, Pulock, Toews.  NYI could be at risk of a Barzal offer sheet - don't think he wants to move but it's a tactic to get a contract - Weber used it and Aho just did.

Like Eriksson he has a 6M cap hit for the next 2 seasons and is owed about the same salary - total 5.25M  vs 5M for Eriksson.  He has a modified NTC but might prefer to waive to play somewhere than end up in the press-box.

Get over it that fans can have their own opinion about what their sports team does and it won't appeal to everyone. It was a bad signing, we didnt need to do a contracty of that length or cap hit, we overpaid just like many GM's do. You really have to draft your top players or trade for them when they are young which means it won't be cheap. Signing players near or over 30 long term is more often than not going to be a bad signing...

Fact is this LE contract right now IS a big issue, if he wasn't here you could take that 6m and spend it wisely to retain some of our players on expiring deals or go after a bigger piece in UFA.

Fact is JB put us in this hole because of the LE deal and the extension he gave Sutter before he played a game...Blues did that to Faulk recently and that has screwed them over from keeping their captain and best D man. Sometimes its best to let players walk as FA, so maybe we should do the same with some of our UFA's??

You can thank the Sedins for having an imput on who they wanted to sign.

Jason Spezza recieved a 7.5m contract extension fofollowing his 30 goal campaign in the same year. Spezza has been far more useless since his contract extension, compared to Loui. Despite not scoring and not being put in a role to score, Loui is excellent defensively and one of the more reliable PK and 5v5 defensive specialists.

No one could have predicted 2 injuries in his first 2 seasons that limited him, then having the Sedins retire. Leaving no real decent players to fill that void.

its pretty easy to shut down a couple players when you have no legitimate first or second line. All any other teams have had to do is shut down a couple players and Vancouver was ineffective.
NOW we have two good lines and its not so easy to deal with us.

Can you imagine if we tacked on an extra 1.5mil to Erikssons contract without a NMC or M-NTC.

His contract would be just as immovable and would be taking up a very much needed extra 1.5mil. If you want to cry about his contract based on hindsight, then maybe open your eyes and look at the lack of a supporting cast there was and his change in role. He has not been used for scoring, he has been used for PK and defensive zone draws

Like I said, this teams window to win is JUST now opening. To this point, his contract has not caused casualties and wether or not he is moved now or plays out his contract, its like have a 6mil savings for the UFA we NEED to put us over the edge and win it all.
