[Signing] Canucks sign Ilya Mikheyev

I like the player in a vacuum.

I think the elements he brings are elements we sorely lack.

But this is a typical UFA overpayment, not a value contract.

So he does fill a need but hard to say if he provides value overall.

If we are able to dump Pearson's salary and replace it with this, it's palatable.

If we dump Garland for cheap instead to accommodate this, then it's ridiculous.

Got to flip Garland now, I hope we don't lose Pearson because he's perfect for the 3rd line whereas Mikheyev slots right into our middle 6, depending on how well Kuzmenko and Podkolzin play.

Right now I'd argue we have the best offensive depth in the division. Weakest RD depth though, but lots to change surely.

Pettersson - Miller - Mikheyev

Kuzmenko - Horvat - Boeser

Pearson - Dickinson - Garland

Lockwood - Lazar - Podkolzin

That's how we lineup right now. Need to fix that 3C and flip a forward for a defenceman.

Definitely looks like a very deep lineup.  If Miller stays, then Pearson and Garland need to go as Podkolzin won't be a 4th liner and Hoglander still needs to be in the lineup.

Not bad! Let's just say I wouldn't simply call it Raking up the Leafs...B)

So on pace for 16 ish goals in his "rookie" year, followed by a 2nd year slump, then on pace for 33 goals last year. If he averages 18-22 for us I would call it a win.

Why do you say that? 14.3 shooting percentage last year, paced for 33 goals

"Not the greatest finisher".

(My son does a lot of hockey related stuff and I'm going on his info, which I trust. He's never steered me wrong. Except when he says JT's 100% being traded. Then WE FITE)

Your first line is all shooters.
How are Mikehyev’s zone entries? Because Brock and Petey enter the zone like they’re hitting an invisible wall…

Like the trades you’ve proposed though!

Exactly.  You cant put Boeser with petey.  Its a disaster

I wonder if we are just basically swapping Garland out for Mikheyev.

That would be a fine deal if we can get an ok return for Garland.  Like for Marino… then we have sorted a couple of issues out.

I like Garland but essentially Garland out, Mikheyev and Marino in would be a solid day of work by PA, especially if there wasn’t a cap.

Do you actually believe that?

I love the guy, but he is 5’6-5’7. Lining up next to DeBrincat last season, he was about a quarter inch taller.

I remember Cliff Ronning being listed as tall as 5’10” at points in his career.

One time I was standing beside him (at a urinal :) ) … the guy was maybe 5’6”, and even then I’d he was wearing skates.

Maybe CapFriendly listed him in skates

lol. That has to be a generous listing. I don't think he would get the angry elf nickname if he was a true 5'10

I actually knew kids who went to school with him in high school in the south shore, he is most definitely around 5'7

I would agree with this if he is providing something as well as 20ish  goal scorer. A strong tenacious forecheck, drawing penalties like Garland, solid PK.

‘If he can provide some other asset especially PK then absolutely fair price for 20ish scorer.
Haven’t really watched him close enough for me to what else he brings.

There's more than one option out there.  Move Pearson and keep Garland.  Roll with quite a bit of speed and likely generate a good amount of chances.  I don't mind this.  Quite a few guys on our team can finish.

Move Garland and/or Pearson for help on D OR for assets that set us up to make moves at either TDL or next years off-season.

It's a pricy contract but you're buying more than just the player.  You're buying flexibility.

Bo must be so glad right now, finally he doesn't have to play with plugs anymore. Management have gone out and got him a KHL star, Podkolzin who's only getting better and now Mikheyev. No more scraps, I expect a big offensive year for Bo.

That being said we need a defensive 3C to take that role from Bo.
