Good teams don’t build by acquiring players that are due for big pay raises. We need cost controlled players which Rutherford also stated. Why would we just kick the can down the road and run into cap troubles again next offseason? None if it lines up with what he claims they need to do. We absolutely cannot afford to add another 7+ million dollar D man. Hughes is our big ticket D. You build around him with cheaper defensive D men and ELC players. So they swung the deal. Marino isn't going to be playing on the 3rd pairing this year. One of Severson or Hamilton has to go. Obviously it is going to be Severson. He played in Kelowna for 4 years, so this is his second home really. He would love to come back I am sure. We need Severson as much as New Jersey needs Miller. This trade is so obvious even Maggie the Monekey could make it. JR could still be sleeping and someone can make this trade for him. The question is how much more can we get from the Devils? And there are a lot more forwards that do… Safer bet to pay a forward longer than a D man.
