He's the most impactful rental still available. Even Carolina was looking to acquire him with them even willing to let him play on his 10M QO next season - SJS informed them last night that they were out.

Bratt was eligible for an extension already on 1 January.  Their past 2 negotiations have been complicated.  Last time around he even refused to negotiate where NJD were presented with only 2 options - either had to pay him long term (he was asking for more than Hughes) or just give him a 1-year.  If neither Bratt or Meier are willing to take a reasonable deal they might end up having to decide between the two.  NJD is a rather light team up front so they migth prefer what Meier brings despite what Bratt has done so far for their team.

Meier, Hischier, Siegenthaler have known each other since they were kids.  NJD's window is just opening.  Don't really see why he would want to look elsewhere if he can get a reasonable deal.

Comes down to futures.  What can or will NJD give up now that won't hand cuff the team or will make SJS bite.

Given of course SJ won't want to be bag holders after the tdl if they don't move him, but what can NJD give up?

Then the question comes down to how will they manage Meier and his next contract as well as the big 4 in NJD?

Currently zero cap space as it exists.  Palat at $6 million is their lowest paid forward long term but while they may be getting value off of Hughes and Hischier now, Hamilton on the back end eating up a monster amount of cap and him seigenthaler and Marino being their only long term assets it's gonna be a hard hard juggle for NJ to fit Meier in even without worrying about Bratt.

Full roster, no real forwards signed after this coming season and those they have deserving solid raises it's gonna be hard to maintain what they have while keeping Meier, even with Nemec Hotlz and Foote in the minors

They can negotiate a different long-term contract and not the $10 mil 1 year deal though .. can't they?

Nothing to do with JT the player or any "lightning rod-iness". I was one of the few people thrilled when we traded for him, and currently his play continues to exceed even my lofty expectations.

Entirely to do with what's best for the organization long term. And IMO, that's getting value for him in trade, age alignment, multiplying assets, clearing cap and BUILDING.

I get what your saying and  agree in part. The part I am concerned about is how this team progresses to the point where they are competitive and how the Core progresses with the type of leadership that he brings. I feel the same way about Schenn. I don't think it would be wise to all of a sudden get rid of this veteran leadership. How old do we want our veteran leadership to be?

We do need to find a way to get rid of the other "Veterans" though and I guess that's the big challenge for management. We do need to shed cap and we do need to rid ourselves of players who just don't fit.

There is a reason why other teams are asking about Miller and Schenn and they are the same reasons why we should be keeping them too.

People keep saying this ... don't see it happening anytime soon unfortunately. They just keep gunning for it.

They are running out of ammo, of not already to keep gunnning for it. They are gonna be a middling team with aged veterans and thin on prospects very soon.

Save for Bratt, their RFAs are bottom of the lineup players with Sharangovich in between.   They'll have holes to fill given their UFAs vets but they are also bringing in prospects like Luke Hughes.  Mercer is their next big ticket but he's due only next year.   Don't see the same issue as you.

That would be the plan.  If he signs his QO he's then UFA.  Don't really see why he wouldn't want to be part of NJD long term.  Their window is just opening.

Yeah, we'll see. They seem to have this TB style of somehow always adding when it looks impossible. They also have a good enough core that there farm system guys step in and do the job. That coupled with a stellar defence and star talent is keeping them sustainable. I get what you're saying though ... how long they can keep it goin is anyone's guess.

@Sharpshooter

Called it. And you doubted me.  Only a 6 point lead on St. Louis. They are a threat to our draft position. Hopefully Kapanen and Berube calling them out get a response down the stretch.

I'd be prepared for #8-10 draft spot, possibly even out of the top 10.

Yeah, it just makes too much sense. Offer him a long term deal in the 8-9 mil range, and he should fit in real nice to their group. Like you said he's a real heavy player which they could definitely use. Seems like a no brainer. His ties to guys like Siegenthaler and Hirschier is huge too!

SJ should be able to milk some good assets on this one. Little bidding war going on.
