Well this is the same management group that in Pittsburgh tried to trade for a player they had retained on without knowing you’re not allowed to do that.

The rule is a crappy one IMO; coaches should be allowed to give direction to players that ask for it before heading into the off season as long as it is before the playoffs and the "season" officially ends.

added... if they truly wanted to level the playing field; the 16 teams that did not qualify for the playoffs should be allowed to do  this in the month of April.

The team violated the CBA, if they wish to get the clause changed they can request the NHL approach the union/nhlpa and negotiate a change.

This could be done during the season or at central bargaining. Or the NHL could tell the Canucks to get stuffed, at least till the CBA expires.

It might be a silly rule, but it is a negotiated and agreed to item, by both sides.

Never said that they didn't violate the rule. Hard to say if it was agreed to by all but majority rules. I just don't think it makes a lot of sense.

If this is the price the team has to pay to ensure a few key players get a head start on their off season training and do all they can to avoid a repeat of this season's slow start, I can only say it's money well spent. I'm stunned at how many people are seeing it otherwise. I hope this management group is going to try something like this with their off season preparations every year.

Vancouver just got warned.  If this fine is not proven to be a deterrent who knows if the penalty won't get elevated beyond cash only.

The CBA allows for penalties that count against the cap and/or the loss of draft picks.  Arizona lost 11th overall in 2021 and a 2nd in 2019 because their trainer decided to test draftees.  He did it without their GM's knowledge and they still lost those picks.
