Maybe it’s time to just let the young guys play and see what we have and adjust next year:

Hughes Hronek

Hirose Johansson

Rathbone Woo

Wolanin McWard

Move Myers to ARZ or CHI.  Could be a tire fire if we go this way though.  Need to see the full plan still.

It would be a tire fire with all those guys in there. Remember; this was a move PA has made to get to Playoffs next year NOT to pull a Blackhawks. Be prepared to sign Mayfield for 6.5m OR to see our 11th OAL shipped out.

I find it hilarious that the Avs and their fans were fine with a $6M Erik Johnson playing on the 3rd pair of their elite Stanley Cup winning roster, but here we are buying out OEL to just have to replace him with another top 4 LHD that will be making at least $5M AAV.

So from next year onwards:

$2M dead cap + $5M = $7M for replacement defenceman

$4.5M dead cap + $5M = $9.5M for replacement defenceman

$4.5M dead cap + $5M = $9.5M for replacement defenceman

$2M dead cap + $5M = $7M for replacement defenceman

$2M dead cap + $5M = $7M for replacement defenceman

$2M dead cap + $5M = $7M for replacement defenceman

$2M dead cap + $5M = $7M for replacement defenceman

woo hoo... we're SO far ahead now.

Maybe next year we get EP d coming in or another young gun.

We have a few young D now which for three years should keep the cap down.

The have made the playoffs...not been a contender. We are on that same trajectory.

I see a lot of upside in that organization.

Gueren was pretty much vindicated... they made the team better. He made the uncomfortable decision and it worked out.

theyve made a number of solid moves.

just goes to show how much having the right mix of players matters

Gross, shades of the Dickinson trade. Should have given him at least another season to see if he could bounce back.

It's like looking in that but magnifying it x 10.   Now we are going to have to listen to how JB screwed this club for another decade.   Allvin better have a plan.  And not waste this.

Mayfield and Graves will both go for $5M+.  No way a top 4 RHD UFA is gonna sign for $4M x 3 lol

Exactly! Mayfield will be 6.5m+ and Graves 5.5m+ in FA. And any decent Low-cost options will choose contenders vs "playoffs please" canucks.

That'd be the best case scenario.  An ELC capable of playing top 4 LHD minutes.  That'll eat up the worst years of this buyout.

Maybe we move down in the draft to pickup an extra 2nd round pick and draft Simashev in the 1st round.

Who said we're signing a $5M replacement?

I hate this. It just feels incredibly shortsighted and like a continuation of all the other shortsighted moves the Canucks have been doing the past few years that have almost destroyed this core's chance to ever compete.

If OEL is able to bounce back at all after having a fully healthy offseason it's easy to see him get back to a 6M quality player. Instead, in years 3 and 4 we're stuck with a 4.77M cap hit during our best chance to compete before Miller almost certainly declines. In order to replace OEL without actually costing more in cap, the Canucks need to find a player for 2.5M that can play at a 6M level. Good luck. Of course this is not to mention that we're then hit with another 4 years of a 2.13M cap hit after that when he would normally have been off the books.

Even waiting one more year to see if he could bounce back would have been a better buyout option.

Like I said before, we will be stuck with those $4 million no matter when we buy OEL out and we would have to unless the guy gets long-term injured. We can't have him taking up a roaster spot with $7.2 million cap hit in those two years.

Only downside is the 2 additional years of 2mil dead cap but by that time the cap should have gone up a lot that the league minimum would be approaching that number.

Lol right?  People keep bringing up Minny.  That's nice, lemme know when Minny is a Stanley Cup contender with their dead cap on the books.

Good lord. Hey guess we're going FA shopping what could go wrong?

Doubt it. What is intriguing is that Hannifin is available for trade. His Cap hit is just 5M next season.

Add Calgary Flames defenseman Noah Hanifin to the growing list of players that could get dealt this summer.

All signs point to the blue-liner not wanting to sign an extension with the club, meaning a trade is likely, according to The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun.

Hanifin is in the final season of his contract with a $4.95-million cap hit and can become an unrestricted free agent in 2024.

The fifth overall pick in 2015, Hanifin is 6-3, skates well, and is only 26 years old, which could make him an appealing addition for several teams. He tallied 38 points this past season and a career-high 48 the campaign prior. His underlying numbers over the last three seasons have been stellar, buoyed by his excellent 2021-22 campaign.

Evolving-Hockey

The Flames have several other players who can become UFAs in 2024, including Elias Lindholm, Tyler Toffoli, Mikael Backlund, Chris Tanev, and Nikita Zadorov.

New Calgary general manager Craig Conroy said during his introductory press conference that he doesn't want to lose pending UFAs for nothing, as the club did with Johnny Gaudreau a year ago.

Pierre-Luc Dubois, Connor Hellebuyck, Alex DeBrincat, and Erik Karlsson are among other players around the league that are expected to be available for trade this offseason.

We can only hope the next few years we have 3 to 4 ELCs playing to make this worth it.
