I saw him more of a middle 6 than a top 6. But, should he build off that breakout year, should be a pretty good deal. Caboose
Another Brisebois win. Does this guy ever mess up? Hagel is already worth that 6.5 this year. In a few seasons this could be a steal.
D-Money
Most long term contracts going forward are going to seem high, because the cap is about to rise steeply. A couple of years ago this deal would have an AAV that starts with a 5. Scored 30 goals this year, and was almost a PPG in the playoffs. He was in place for 30 goals in 2021-22 as well before the trade to Tampa - took him a while to settle in, but was back at his usual this season. A defensively strong player who scores that much is very valuable. By comparison, Blake Coleman never scored more than 22 goals, and he got $4.9M long term in free agency, and that’s in the middle of COVID, with no cap raises on the horizon. 1

KirkSave
Hagel is a good complimentary winger for TB but that is a lot of money IMHO. Their top 6 is full of skilled, speedy, lil guys but somehow they are a team to be reckoned with. Kuch, Point, Hagel, Sheary, Cirelli, Stammer. 3 elite talents in there though. -AJ-
Massively underrated player--IMO one of the top defensive forwards and can also score a good number of points. That said, it's a big contract for a single breakout year. Given his age though, there's a good chance it wasn't a flash in the pan and he's got more like that. Popular Post coryberg
I'm surprised they didn't Hagel him more 2 6 1
Elias Pettersson
He basically got the Cirelli contract. Don’t think you could have paid him less than Cirelli. Jeannot will get a similar deal if he can get back to his rookie season and not try and fight everyone in the league.
Coconuts
Did they even Hagel?
rekker
I like the player, the amount is debatable, but a decent gamble for Tampa. I just can't get behind 8 year contracts, too long. NHL should cap at six. 1
EternalCanuckFan
If the cap goes up appreciably next year, then this deal will also keep plenty of space for them to re-sign Stamkos and still fill out the roster. Amount makes more sense than with Killorn given the age differences.

Big defence and big bottom six definitely helps provide a counter balance
JeremyCuddles
I don't think people realize how good this man is defensively. He's not shutdown, but he's solid. Add 25-30 goals to that, and you get a 6.5mil player. Makes that Boeser deal look pretty bad, thankfully it's short.

I would not say top defensive forwards (scoring suppression > takeaways) but he is probably going to be worth every penny here. 3 hours ago, Elias Pettersson said: He basically got the Cirelli contract. That Pavelski-like puck tipping ability came out of nowhere that one year and then it was gone in a flash. You want him to punch less and score more? Good luck... Tampa better hope Jeannot learns how to score again. They gave up an entire draft class for him. If all he does is fight then that might turn out to be the worst trade in NHL history.

Pittsburgh might beg to differ after gifting us Naslund for Stojanov.
