Messier's Contract with the Canucks: A handwritten piece of hockey history

All in all a standard way contracts are negotiated. Sit down and hash out ideas, sign off and then get it vetted, typed out and registered.

Quinn was told to sign him so they sat down and worked it out, as you can see there is no rocket science involved.

The number 11 thing though is disrespectful to Wayne Maki, I thought his number was retired after he died.

There was no guarantee for him to be the captain.

Residing in Washington reduced his taxes but increased his travel time.

Anticipation of the playoffs was a good thing.

No taxes on loans and repayment can be delayed a very long time.

Love the beer stains on the one page.

"TRAVEL FOR MESSIER MANAGEMENT INTERNATIONAL" 2 people.  Does that mean that not only did he demand his own hotel room, but he had this marketing management company entourage also paid to travel with him to market his "brand"?

What an entitled POS. And no, sorry, this is not 'how contracts are done".  No way an average NHL grinder can include these kinds of demands, even accounting for smaller $ numbers.  He definitely made sure that he had a number of lucrative escape clauses if he bailed out early. It was a total hit and run.

Kinda weird coincidence.

Vancouver loses heartbreaking 7 game series in Stanley Cup final.  Hires the guy that beat them, Keenan.  Goes on to have some of the worst seasons in team history.

Actually, Benning is a bit different. He was also a Canucks player in the past... Unlike Keenan, who never played hockey or any good relationship with the team.

Taking the C away from our long time Captain was a joke, should have never happened. The hiring of Keenan and signing of Messier have to be 2 of the worst moves this organization ever made.

Linden willingly gave up the 'C' to Messier. Linden regrets that decision and Messier regrets accepting the captaincy.

Very different.  Keenan was a egotistical cancer to the organization whereas Benning is the nice guy in the back room quietly building the masterpiece.  Hopefully nice guys don't always finish last but they tried the cancerous types and that didn't work out so well neither.

Hmmm. The story I heard was Mess went up to Linden and said, ‘thanks for the C’ and Linden’s response was ‘uh what?’

Cant remember which new source it was so who knows how reliable that is or isn’t....

Keenan did trade Linden for Bertuzzi and McCabe who was turned into a Sedin.  At least he had that.  I hope you're right about the masterpiece, not seeing it.

Think of how humble of a guy Linden is, it would make sense for him to give up the 'C'. Who knows though.
