JCM7
Even when Burr was scoring, he did it in bunches. He always seemed to catch fire for a while and then slow down in terms of his scoring. What makes Burrows valuable (more so than scoring) is work ethic and passion. He plays great defense, never gives up on a play, and works his ass off at both ends of the ice. If you could have 12 Alex Burrows on your team you would dominate. Without the Sedins (or any player of that caliber) on his line, he probably tops out at about 25 goals, but he is the best player on the team in a lot of areas. No matter where you put him he won't hurt you. Burr is an exceptional 2 way forward. Last year was a disaster. He probably won't score 35 goals this year, but he will contribute in a big way so long as he is healthy. Any player can be traded for the right price, but the return for him would not be worth the trade. Is he worth 4.5M? We'll see. What I do know is that he has no weaknesses in his game and he always helps the team. If he had no goal scoring whatsoever, he would still be worth 2.5M in my books. Stats don't mean everything. Ghostsof1915
Burrows, Edler and Markstrom, 2nd rounder in 2016 and 17 = $10.7 Million. For Zetterberg = $6.08 Million until 2021. We clear $4 million off our cap hit. Detroit still has $4 million in space, and they get younger. They get Burrows off their books faster than we get with Zetterberg. Naaahhhhhhh. JCM7
The cap is at 69M. Unless my math is bad, that works out to an average of a little over 3M per player. Burr is much better than average. If most 30 goal scorers stop scoring they have little left to offer. Burrows does a lot more than score. He is way more valuable to the team than you are giving him credit for. kloubek
I don't think ANY player should be untouchable - regardless of their talent level or how well they are liked. I've been an advocate for keeping Burrows all during this flurry of suggesting we get rid of him. BUT, if the right deal came along and he was willing to waive, then so be it. I just think most of CDC is writing him off too quickly due to one poor year. Is he going to have a career year? Almost certainly not - especially if he isn't going to be playing with the Sedins who could make a pylon score. But with that said, I do think he will have a bounceback year compared to last, after which point he'd be a far more tradable asset. Buy low, sell high. It works in the stock market, and I'm certain it would work in hockey as well.
Brick Tamland
I think this management group has decided that other than the all-star Sedins everyone from the 2011-present is open for business. Burrows and others should just accept that change is here. Maybe NTC should be tied to the GM who signed them and if the GM is fired it's open season... bigbadcanucks
I'm all for every player earning their spot. My post quoted bigbadcanucks and was questioning his/her opinion of Burr being second line guy. Let me answer that for you gurn (I'm a guy by the way). I'm parroting what Benning has stated...Burrows, according to JB is slotted for second line duties. So, I'm thinking that's where Burrows is going to given a long hard look. Now, if it so happens that he performs well enough to warrant a the RW spot with the Sedins, great, but I believe that spot is going to be won by Vrbata. Burrows' play (along with that of the Sedins) has declined steadily since the 2011 but the rate of last year's drop off was most likely an over-representation of the decline...so is Burrows a legit first line RW in the NHL? I doubt it, but we'll only know based on his performance and production. One thing is for sure -- Burrows is being paid like a second liner, so the expectation is that he produces like a second liner. So this notion of he does lots of other things well is all good and dandy, but I'm sure the brass is expecting 20G/20A from him. As well, I would think JB/TL/WD will expect Burrows to carry the second line given his experience and that he's being paid what $4.5M. After all, JB stated that Booth was paid like a second liner and they didn't see him in that role, so I'm sure if Burrows does not produce, the same metrics will be applied to him as was to Booth. So, all this is to say is that IMO, Burrows is going to be given a legit shot at showing that he's a top six guy...it'll be up to him to take it and make it his own. This will be no different than for the Sedins, Vrbata, Bonino and Kassian.
Pete M
How many years does he have left at $4.5M. Who was the genius that offered him this contract...the guy must have been also his Player Agent!! I know...... when he is playing good..... we will pay him what he is worth, which is $2M for 2 years, but then when he is getting older and on his down hill slide..... we will pay $4.5M and sign him for 4 years. Brilliant...just brilliant.......bloody genius!
Sedintwinpowersactivate
Forward opening night lineup as follows... D.Sedin H. Sedin Vrbata Burrows Bonino Kassian Higgins Matthis Hansen Vey Richardson Dorsett Those are 4 solid lines that can contribute offence and play well defensively. I'm actually not worried about Burrows... I think he will contribute 20 goals and is a swiss army knife of a player... PK, PP, agitator. Is 4.5m too high... maybe... but he was underpaid for years...nothing JB can do about the contract Gillis did....i see him bouncing back.... offence will be just OK though without the Sedins as linemates. My biggest concern going into the season is D. Sedin.... is he still a 1st line Left winger??? If the Sedins don't bounce back we will be in trouble in the Pacific Division. Competitive most nights but not a playoff team with out the Sedins at 70-80 points each. This will be one of the most interesting seasons to watch! This will be one of the most interesting seasons to watch! this is much more realistic. forget the 35 goals people. it will never happen again. until burr started rolling with the twins he would have been a 20 goal guy TOPS! it's not just burr. the twins aren't those players anymore either so nobody will come close to the numbers of 2011. burr can play for me anyday but his 35 along with kesler's 40 and daniel's 42 or whatever were one offs. sad but true. chuckie's contract reflects a distant past and that is why mike gillis is unemployed. MoneypuckOverlord
Dear Burrows Please kindly do the team a favor and waive your NTC. Your not wanted here anymore. your classless way of playing hockey is no longer welcomed, you are a black eye to the team, and you are pretty much powerplays waiting to happen FOR THE OTHER TEAM. Ice T
I think he could get better and improve but I don't want to see him get traded and be glade he got traded because he's playing with a better group. For example Like Pavel Datsyuk picked in 1998 in the 6th round #171 first pick then turn outs to be one of the best player in the NHL. They shouldn't traded him but tell him pick up your game you can prove your talent he's in the NHL for a reason because he is a talented player !!
