A young forward, with size, that hasn't lived up to potential. Hmmm, why does that sound familiar?

Kassian ha?

No faith. Shame on you.

He wasn't worth picking up. Nowhere near enough skill to play on a scoring line, nowhere near enough grit to play on a checking line. Add in a pretty lackluster work ethic and you have yourself a bust.

Really, he is one of your typical too good to stay in the minors, not good enough to stay in the pros kind of guy. He'll be back in Europe soon enough.

Heatley, Paarjarvi-Svensson, Pinizzotto & Hackett clear waivers.

Just claiming on waivers isn't always as easy as it sounds. Have to be ready to throw someone else on waivers to make space.

Sometimes sparks a trade with the other team taking back a lower contract to balance contract numbers.

And? Like people say, for every 5-10 of those guys, you get a Bertuzzi, Lucic, Neely,

Are you saying you'd rather not take a chance on any young talent? This is a waiver pickup, whats the worst that can happen?

Tieing up an NHL roster spot. It's easier and more flexible to trade an asset not in your plans for someone you want to take a chance on after they've cleared waivers because it allows that team to take advantage of waiver rules.

Since MPS is now cleared, and likely assigned to AHL, any team who trades for him can call him up and send him down without having to clear waivers again until either iirc 10 games or 30 days on the NHL roster has been accumulated.

So it allows a team to take a small, calculated chance to see if a player can resurrect their career. Worst case scenario, you have farm team depth.
