I know his cousin/nephew(Can't recall the correct relation) Justin Rai plays for the BCHL's Prince George Spruce Kings; http://www.bchl.ca/leagues/rosters_profile.cfm?clientID=1413&leagueID=2393&playerID=938352&teamID=408655&pos=F

They're about to enter Round 2 of the BCHL playoffs against the Chilliwack Chiefs, puck drops for game 1 on Friday @ Prospera Center in Chilliwack. :P

I always tended to question his work ethic. He asked for more ice time rather than try and earn it. He was more of a perimeter player rather than going to the net. I saw those as warning signs that he wasn't going to make it and never had a lot of faith in him as a result.

I remember watching a vid of him on the Canucks website and he was too slow/bad at skating...

One of the drills he even fell when they were skating backwards at high speed.

I think Gillis only drafted him to appease the brown community...

He also drafted Jordan Subban... Not that that was a purely political move.

The restaurant mentioned above does make seem dam good samosas so that's not the worst backup plan for a 5th round pick lol.

Didn't he break his back or have some serious back injury that effectively ended his career? That's what I seem to recall.

Car accident. Never played the same afterwards

Errrr he was never a sure fire nhler. Not even close. Watching him during the training camps back in the day his career was a career minor leager at best.

That said a freak car accident screwed up his career. It's quite a sad story.

Rai was a 5th round pick. Most 5th rounders never play even a single game in the NHL and only about 10% become legitimate NHL players. (See, for example, http://www.milehighhockey.com/2014/7/23/5931789/draft-percentages.)

No 5th rounder is a sure fire NHLer. In fact, on the data, no-one picked below about the #10 overall position can be called a sure-fire NHLer.

As we can with the experience we have had with Schroeder, Jensen, Gaunce, and Shinkaruk, even mid-to-low first rounders are far from being sure-fire NHL players. Any of those guys might become a good NHL player, but it is not sure-fire and if two of those four make it as legitimate NHL regulars for a few seasons, that would be as much as we could expect.
