Not sure how his overall play is but in 12gp he is sitting at .5 points per game with 6 points (3 goals & 3 assists) with the Comets.

Good Stats.  Just called up..  Hope we get a look.

good luck Ashton Sautner!

HF Ranking Spring 2016

18. (NR) Ashton Sautner, D, 6.5D
Signed as free agent, March 2015

Ashton Sautner was a bit of a surprise to start the 2015-16 season. The undrafted rearguard edged out a few other players to remain with the Comets, while some were assigned straight to Kalamazoo of the ECHL. Sautner is another project type prospect but his steady play has proven that he is willing to learn and improve any way he can. Sautner will remain with the Comets for the foreseeable future but if he can continue to climb the depth chart he may get his chance at a call-up to the big club sometime over the next season or two

He looked a whole lot better than he did a year ago, TL saying he's bulked up a fair bit.  Maybe never an NHL regular, but will become a call-up option if he continues to improve like he has.

Eventual Biega replacement...?

Sautner ranks #19 in the Canucks Army midterm prospects rankings: http://canucksarmy.com/2017/1/11/canucks-army-midterm-prospect-rankings-19-20

Open below to read their full writeup:

#19 ASHTON SAUTNER

STATS:

Ashton Sautner stats

Another player that's struggled to get into Utica's lineup this season is defenceman Ashton Sautner. He's played just 14 of a possible 36 games, and managed only a single assist. This could be seen as somewhat of a step back for Sautner, who had a genuinely promising rookie season in the AHL, playing 50 games, scoring 11 points and getting significant minutes at both even-strength and the PK.

Taking a step back has been somewhat of a theme among Canucks prospects this season, who seem to have all regressed simultaneously. It's unclear why exactly Sautner has struggled to see the ice so much this season, but it could simply be that the Utica Comets have struggled mightily and Travis Green feels as though he simply can't afford to give any rope to players he doesn't trust. Sautner's also suffered from some concussion issues this season, which has kept him out of game action at times.

Sautner was a standout at the Canucks Young Stars Classic for all the wrong reasons this September, looking generally shaky and blowing a tire on the final play of the tournament, which directly contributed to a goal against in overtime.

It's not all doom and gloom when it comes to Sautner, however. He played well enough in his rookie season to earn a call-up with the Canucks, and has plenty of time to grow. Using pGPS, he carries an expected success% of 5.2%, and an expected points/82 of 16.5. Most of Sautner's statistical cohorts did not play over 200 NHL games, but a few had decent careers, with Aaron Ward and Mark Fistric being the most notable.

Sautner pGPS

By my eyes, Sautner's true capabilities are probably more in line with the player that showed flashes of potential last year than the one that's been a disappointment this season. If Sautner hopes to have a shot at the NHL, he'll have to work on his consistency and increase his offensive totals. Sautner has a fairly strong transitional game, so this isn't out of the question.

Reviving a long-inactive thread...

Sautner had a really rough start to the year getting concussed early on and wasn't the same player when he came back. He looked like he was a constant step behind trying to get back up to the speed of the game after being out of game action for so long, and really struggled making even simple plays in his own zone; he was a turnover machine in December no matter who he was paired with. He did recover well in the latter half of the season and was able to play a steadier, safer game most nights that was reminiscent of the decent rookie year he had. At his best, he has a good eye for the game defensively but isn't a player who makes much of an impact on the offensive side. More of a stay at home guy. I mean, he tied with Demko in points...

It'll be interesting to see how Sautner gets deployed next season in the last year of his ELC with an influx of young defensemen that'll be vying for jobs in Utica in the fall. At this point, he hasn't shown much in the way of NHL potential and should be considered a long shot to ever play a game with the Canucks... however, with the concussion completely sidetracking him this year its hard to say what we can expect from him next year. He'll need to step up and take a bigger role on the Comets to show that he deserves to be in the lineup every night over guys like Chatfield, Olson, Neill, Cederholm, etc (not all guarantees to be there, of course) and hopefully take a trajectory similar to Evan McEneny's where he can grow into more responsibilities as the year progresses. He doesn't have the offensive game that McEneny does though, so he'll have to work on carving out a niche as a defensive specialist who can kill penalties to earn his ice time.

Is Cederholm coming back to NA? I was impressed with Chatfield's play in the 2 games I watched against London.

He's said that he wants to be here, so I'd assume he'll at least come to training camp to try and earn a spot with the Comets. I'm hoping he does, it wouldn't make sense to still have him under contract and to loan him to Sweden again next year... if Pedan isn't there, Utica could use a physical element on the back end.

Considering how Utica really lacked physicality and had so many of the same redundant two way dman, would like to think the Canucks management would add some different pieces to the blueline for Utica.  Other than Pedan and Subban, (Shields, Robak, McEneny, Billins, and Sautner) now adding Brisebois and Chatenfield, there are a lot of redundant two way dman.  They need some different pieces on that backend to be successful whether the Canucks or Utica's GM Conacher adds.

For Ashton its hard to not have an offensive game and be purely a defensive specialist without some sort of physical element to their game.  I think he is either going to get buried or find his way back to the ECHL.

Yeah, its a make or break year for Sautner, he hasn't done nearly enough to guarantee himself a spot in the fall, especially with a new coach coming in who won't know the players personally or have any loyalty to those who've already played there. I don't think its out of the question that Brisebois could step in and be better than Sautner right away despite the gap in pro experience. I also wonder if Cederholm returns, that he could bump Sautner out of the lineup since he plays a defensive style with more physicality/toughness to him which as you said is a rare commodity on the Comets roster.

Interesting to see him called up to the Canucks. I guess they really don't have any better options with Holm and McEneny injured and Wiercioch one day away from having to clear waivers again.

Anyone watch Utica games regularly and have any thoughts on his play so far this season. He seems to have taken on quite a big role, especially with all the injuries they've been having. If the Canucks defense suffers another injury is he capable of stepping in for a few games, or would the Canucks just call up Wiercioch and risk losing him on waivers when they send him down again?

At this point, if we called up Weircioch, he probably wouldn't be sent back down with the Russian roulette of injuries we are having.

Wiercioch is the 11th d-man on the Canucks right now in my opinion. Tanev, Edler, Del Zotto, Pouliot, Hutton, Stecher, Gudbranson, Biega, Holm and McEneny are all ahedaa of him. Holm just got back from injury and I wouldn't be surprised to see the Canucks call him up and send down Sautner once Holm gets up to game speed. Gudbranson could play tomorrow.
