"As a primary logo, the orca isn't going anywhere"

The word Canuck means to be a true canadian. Where the hell does a whale fit into this? I get it represents our coastal lifestyle, and has some form of aboriginal roots in there, but Canuck means CANADIAN, and you can tell by looking at it its just a corporate sell-off to the fanbase.

JOHNNY CANUCK FOR OUR LOGO!

how does the montreal c logo represent a canadien, which means french-canadian? and don't say the "h" in the middle standing for "less habitants" because it doesn't.

I am first and foremost a stick in the rink guy, just a clean, simple, and classic jersey. In terms of folks I know across Canada, and in the USA (this is a small sample of course lol), have all said that the stick in the rink just looks like a classic and timeless hockey sweater. So I still hold out hope for it. Pat Quinn wore a stick in the rink as well, so even newer fans have been introduced to it.

Now, if they are super intent on keeping the Orca, at least please change the current sweater. Subjectively I think it is one of the ugliest sweaters in the league...and as a long time Canucks fan, I hate to say that.

this tidbit, to me, was the most interesting thing to come out of the summer summit last night. listening to vic de bonis explain the logic behind that decision made perfect sense ... except that it didn't.

he talked about how for the younger generation of fans, anybody up to age 25 or 26, that's all they've ever known. they've had the logo for 20 years and have created an identity with it. he felt that the addition of the vancouver word mark really hammered home the team's image and what they represent.

i see his point. i respect the thought process. but i beg to differ.

now, i know that it was the organization's goal, when they came out with this newest iteration of the sweater, to end the jersey carousel and to create an image that would be long lasting and would grow a sense of tradition akin to that that goes hand in hand with some other teams in the league (original six, flyers, blues, flames, oilers, penguins etc. spring immediately to mind). i understand that desire completely.

but it's too late. you can't go through 5 or 6 completely different looks in the first 40 years and then expect to create a unified, traditional image afterward. it just doesn't work that way. nobody is going to forget the first 40 years happened, and why would you want them to?

instead of trying to force a unified brand identity that not only won't actually work, but also that is preferred by at most 50% of their fan base over previous designs, i think this team would be better served by embracing their REAL identity, which is changing their look every 10 years or so.

they way it's worked so far has broken up the logos and jerseys by convenient "eras" that makes for easy association for fans and enhanced nostalgia.

the stick in rink was the original era, an identity that resonates with the fans that have been around for 40+ years.

the flying v was the smyl era, and will always be associated with the 82 run and towel power.

the plate of spaghetti was the linden/bure/mclean era, associated with the 94 run.

the maroon and navy whale, personally, i associate differently with two adjoining eras; the white jersey is keenan and messier and futility, the blue jersey is the west coast express/crawford era. i suspect most people will have slightly varying views on that one.

and finally, the current jersey is the sedin era, forever linked to the 2011 run.

i personally love that you can break canucks history down this way. it creates a vivid, crystal clear series of memories for me, picturing different guys in different sweaters and knowing when they played, who they played with, and remembering deeply how it felt at the time.

this team is entering a new era. the horvat/virtanen/etc era. i wish the team would realize the errors in their good intentions and come out with a new look for the new core.

What De Bonis says and what the Canucks do are TWO DIFFERENT things.

The majority of Canucks fans(and that goes way beyond CDC) would love to see the hideous Orca gone.

If the Canucks really wanted to keep the Orca, there would be some green in the logo and without the "VANCOUVER". Even the classic block font would be used.

De Bonis is just Aquilini's puppet VP who's not going to let any secrets out regarding any potential logo/uniform change.

If the club can fire a 20-year employee and one of the very best, most respected and well-liked trainers in the business in Mike Burnstein, the club can most certainly do away with one of the most disliked and controversial logos in sports.

So... You like the stick in rink logo and sweaters, and you're okay with the orca, but hate the sweater? Makes no sense. They're the same jersey with different logos on them.

Our current jerseys are hideous. The orca will never be a classic look. This team will never have an original six look, may as well keep changing the jersey till we find something that looks good. The blue/green color scheme with orca and Vancouver lettering is terrible, and is going on 5-6 years with no change.

I will disagree that the blue/green color scheme looks bad, these colors represent the Pacific Northwest....The Orca is okay, but I do agree that the lettering is terrible (either change the font,or get rid of the lettering all together..IMO)....

When I saw the orca, upon introduction of Orca Bay Sports & Entertainment, I thought 'may as well be a picture of a fax machine for all it matters'. Soulless and corporate.

I don't buy the corporate logo to promote Orca Bay theory at all. It's hogwash. Orca Bay was simply a parent company that didn't sell anything to promote.

Ultimately I could give a rats tush as to how or why we wound up with the logo. It's a great representation for a team in the Pacific Northwest. Which is why I think it's the best logo we've had.

I am going to get flamed for this but give the orca another forty or fifty years and there will be undisputed royalty to it. :P

On a more serious note, the orca needs a updating to make it look less like a constipated whale and get 'VANCOUVER' off the jersey.

I will take it a step further....

Change the name. Vancouver Orcas. Vancouver West Coasters. Vancouver Haidas. Vancouver First Nations.

JOHNNY CANUCK FOR OUR LOGO!

A few things to note:

1. Blackhawks is a reference to a WW2 unit, but they still keep an Indian as their logo (doesn't fit as much as Orca's dont fit).

2. How is Aboriginal different than "true Canadian"; if anything they are the truest Canadians as Canada is an aboriginal word?

3. Ottawa senators have a Roman Legionnaire as their logo. Doesn't fit, since that is not the same as a Senator.

A lot of things don't necessarily perfectly fit as logos. Orca is not the greatest design, but Johnny Canuck isn't much better. The best logos are often the simplest.

I don't feel strongly that we need a new jersey, but I must say the original post about how the Canucks eras can be broken up into the different jerseys is apt and interesting.

I do think it is cool to be able to see and know the eras of Canucks by seeing the different jerseys. The plus side on keeping the same jersey is that in time everyone will have the same style jersey.

Look at when we went to Calgary in the playoffs. Entire arena is a sea of red. Easy to pick out a random Canuck fan. I would like to see that in Rogers Arena. Sea of blue and green everywhere. I find this effect doesn't happen when everyone is wearing different colours/ Logos of the Canucks.

I am personally a fan of the blue and green color scheme and like the Orca. I work in tourism and every day talk to people who travel the world to come here and see Killer Whales. They are definitely relevant to Vancouver and the surrounding areas.

If we had our current home jersey since day 1 everyone would likely embrace it as much as any of the older looks.

I love everything about the jersey except for the Vancouver wordmark on the front, but I can live with that.

Also be careful what you wish for, if for some reason they did change the jerseys, there's a strong chance it could turn out as terrible as most of the other recent ones.

I'm thankful we didn't mess with the striping on ours, surprisingly we have one of the more classic looking designs compared to over half the league.
