Yes, but he only refilled that pool begrudgingly!

Oh yeah, and which players are more important to teams, their 1st-round-picks - or everyone else?  Right, it's the first round picks that make a much bigger impact.  And, how has Benning been doing there?  Is he really drafting as well as you claim?

Let's see...  Benning's had 4 first-round picks since he took over, #5, 6, 23 and 24.  So, let's just look at the re-drafts to see how he did:

1.  Our #5 is now ranked #9 (a drop of 4 positions).  Oh yeah, and the guy everyone expected him to take rose to #3.

2.  Our #6 is now ranked OFF THE BOARD (he wouldn't even go in the first round - yes, an extremely high lottery pick!)

3.  Our #23 is now ranked 13th.  So, one good pick.

4.  Our #24 is now ranked 25 (but he would go a lot lower if the re-draft was re-done today).

Add all that up - and our 1st round drafting has been utterly abysmal.  The players we take tend to drop precipitously after we take them.  And, just look what he did with those two lottery-picks!  He took one of them and threw it directly into the trash.  One of the most valuable assets we've ever had - and he tossed it right into the garbage.

that same ranking has Tryamkin at 19, Demko at 24 and Goldobin at 28. Boeser at 13.  I'd say Jim's eye is pretty solid. And its way too early to take Jake "off the board", thats ridiculous.

McKenzie on Philip Holm:

The report I got is that he’s a real smooth-skating defenceman. Timing is everything; he’s got a goal and two assists today, so suddenly Leafs fans think they’re potentially getting this defenceman who is lighting it up offensively. He’s not known as an offensive defenceman in the Swedish league. His greatest asset is that he’s a real smooth skater, [but he’s] not overly creative and doesn’t play a whole lot of power play time in the Swedish league. [He’s] a mobile, defensive defenceman who has got a really good work ethic. I think one of the things the person who I know in Sweden said about him is that he knows what he is and what he isn’t. He knows he’s not Erik Karlsson so he plays a nice, controlled game, but he’s a real good skater and puck retriever and puck mover.

Thanks for that.

Sounds like a 6'1" left handed version of Tanev.

I see it like Burke describes this kind of thing, a found wallet. In terms of "asset management" landing a potentially solid stay at home D just hitting his prime years for free is pretty much the gold standard of realistic asset management isn't it? He's only 25, same as Guddy, he could still be a piece of the puzzle for the next group.

I found 200 BUCKS! lying on the street, last Nov near Nozaki St of the Japan Rail line.(prob from some drunken salaryman, ambling home after pachinko-fix)

Tells ya..I felt like an NHL GM who finds a 25 yr old Scandinavian D-man, or something..

Craig Button on Holm:

"I would call him a steady player. Maybe he develops into a player that gives more than people thought."

"For any team, you're building up your depth. Going after a player like that is solid business."

Bob McKenzie on Holm:

21 Points in 52 Games with the Vaxjo Lakers in the Swedish Elite League this past season.

Worst case scenario he's a late bloomer and they re-sign him. Worst case scenario he's Larsen 2.0 and he leaves after the season.

He's waivers and expansion draft exempt.

Yeah, because draft-picks who can't even handle the AHL three years after being drafted have a decent chance of dominating in the big leagues!  /s

Bob's description sounds like a LH'ed Tanev.

So Vegas takes Pizza-man & we free up 3.6 mill? Don't think they'll be so generous - expect they'll take Gauncer.

So.  Which lottery pick did he throw in the trash again?

What's his ceiling, after he fully develops?

Hopefully what he did this year in the SHL and WHC. Obviously the SHL and NHL are different beasts so if he achieves for the Canucks what he did last year, that's a very successful signing.

The biggest mistake was keeping Willy but who knows if he was told to keep him from ownership who may not have wanted to have 3 head coaches on the payroll and also might have been making some of those decisions you don't agree with.
