Saudi Royal Family Considering Replacement For Crown Prince bin Salman: Report

he major French daily Le Figaro on Thursday published a bombshell story which reports the Saudi royal family is actively considering a replacement to crown prince Mohammed bin Salman (MbS) as next in line to succeed his father King Salman as the kingdom finds itself under the greatest international pressure and scrutiny it's faced in its modern history over the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi — widely believed to have been killed on orders of MbS himself.

The Li Figaro report's unnamed diplomatic source says the Allegiance Council, which is historically the body responsible for approving the order of succession to the throne, is currently meeting in secret (translation from the French):

For several days, the Allegiance Council for the ruling Saudi family is meeting in the utmost discretion, says a diplomatic source to Le Figaro in Paris. The information has been confirmed by a Saudi Arabian contacted in Riyadh. Composed of a delegate representing each of the clans  at least seven  of the royal family, this body, responsible for inheritance problems, examines the situation created by the disappearance, still unresolved, more than a fortnight ago, of the journalist dissident Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

The report in France's oldest top three national newspapers further suggests the ruling family is seeking to replace the 33-year old MbS with his much less ambitious and more predictable brother, Prince Khalid bin Salman.

The council was already seen as having broken the customary rules of succession last year when it appointed MbS as the new crown prince over next-in-line to the throne Mohammed bin Nayef; however, the council's authority has tended to be seen as a rubber stamp on already decided succession by the most powerful figures within the ruling family

The Le Figaro report further cited a Saudi source who explained the transition wouldn't necessarily be immediate, but that Khalid would gradually replace his brother.

Khalid, who's even younger than MbS at 28, is said to be popular both at home and abroad, and is generally seen as someone who can improve the kingdom's image in the West.

Prince%20Khalid.jpg Saudi Ambassador to the U.S. Prince Khalid bin Salman. He was recalled last week after Jamal Khashoggi's disappearance.

He's been Saudi ambassador to the United States since taking the post in April 2017 but was recalled last week, according to The New York Times. He flew directly back to Riyadh where he was present for Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's high pressure but brief visit with King Salman and MbS to discuss to Khashoggi disappearance

Newsweek summarizes his political career as follows

Before becoming an ambassador, the prince was an adviser at Saudi Arabia’s embassy in Washington as well as at the Ministry of Defense in Riyadh, according to his bio on the embassy’s website. Prior to that, he served as a pilot in the kingdom’s air force, flying F-15s and taking parting in more than 50 combat missions in Syria and Yemen.

When he took his post in Washington, Marcelle M. Wahba, a former U.S. ambassador to the United Arab Emirates and president of the Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington, told Saudi Arabia’s English-language newspaper Arab News that Prince Khalid’s biggest challenge would be improving and broadening the kingdom’s image.

If the ruling family is pushing to replace MbS, it's likely to be announced fast (or at least "leaks" of the news will continue) in order to relieve the continued pressure on Riyadh.

Currently a public campaign is mounting for lobbying and media companies to pull out of Saudi events, especially the Saudi Future Investment Initiative summit set for this month which as of Thursday US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said he would not be attending, adding his name to a host of other officials.

It's almost as if Kashoggi was a black teenager who was killed by a cop:

Hard-line Republicans and conservative commentators are mounting a whispering campaign against Jamal Khashoggi that is designed to protect President Trump from criticism of his handling of the dissident journalist’s alleged murder by operatives of Saudi Arabia — and support Trump’s continued aversion to a forceful response to the oil-rich desert kingdom.

In recent days, a cadre of conservative House Republicans allied with Trump has been privately exchanging articles from right-wing outlets that fuel suspicion of Khashoggi, highlighting his association with the Muslim Brotherhood in his youth and raising conspiratorial questions about his work decades ago as an embedded reporter covering Osama bin Laden, according to four GOP officials involved in the discussions who were not authorized to speak publicly.

A journalist is murdered because he's been critical of a friend of Trump's....Republicans: "How can we make it look like this guy had it coming?"

Stay classy....<_<

New York Times report

The New York Times reports that the Saudi's are considering blaming General Ahmad Al-Assiri for Khashoggi's death. He's close to the Crown Prince.

"Even with the investigation still ostensibly underway, the Saudis are already pointing to General Assiri as the culprit, according to the three people familiar with the Saudi plans," the report says, nothing that the White House has already been given his name.

The story also says the Kushner has been telling Trump to stand by MBS, saying the furor will pass just like it did for the kidnapping of Lebanon's PM and the airstrike on the busload of Yemeni children.

"The Saudi rulers are expected to say that Mr. Assiri received verbal authorization from Prince Mohammed to capture Mr. Khashoggi for an interrogation in Saudi Arabia, but either misunderstood his instructions or overstepped that authorization and took the dissident's life, according to the two of the people familiar with the Saudi plans," the report says, adding that he was seeking to prove himself.

Assiri has been a spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition that invaded Yemen and was promoted by the Crown Prince to his current position.

Classic rookie mistake. Who hasn't accidentally dismembered someone on their first day on the job? See liberals, making a big deal out of nothing.

I hope Trump trips down the stairs and breaks his neck.

Khashoggi spoke to Mohammed bin Salman directly moments before he was killed - report

Sun 21 Oct 2018 20:57:21 GMT

New report on the Turkish press

salman.png

The denials and revelations in the Khashoggi saga have reached fresh levels of insanity.

Turkish pro-government daily Yeni Safak -- the same organization that published details of the yet-unverified audio of Khashoggi's murder -- now reports that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman contacted Khashoggi by phone directly and tried to convince him to return to Riyadh.

He refused out of fear he would be arrested and killed and refused the offer. Instead, he was killed in the consulate a short time later.

A series of denials by Saudi officials were followed by a dramatic turn on Friday as a Saudi statement admitted he was killed in the consulate in some kind of brawl gone wrong. Bin Salman has continued to deny any involvement but a phone call would certainly undermine that.

Turkey has promised to reveal details of its investigation on Tuesday to his party's parliamentary group.

h/t @zerohedge

In a separate report, the WSJ says the MBS spoke to Jared Kushner on October 10 and asked "why the outrage?" He was told to get to the bottom of it fast.

"The prince's confusion soon turned into rage. 'He was really shocked that there was such a big reaction to it,' said a person close to the royal court. 'He feels betrayed by the West. He said he would look elsewhere and he will never forget how people turned against him before evidence was produced.'"

Rather vague report from a Turkish paper, so take it with a grain of salt.

Not sure how they can claim he was killed in a brawl gone wrong. Aren't brawls usually pretty even and not 15 on 1? That sounds like an ambush to me.

Perhaps it's time for a regime change...

The problem is the country with the greatest military capability to do so supports protecting rapists, and has a president that would love to do this to the media in his own country.  We need to forcibly remove Agent Orange from power before it's realistic to talk about bringing positive change to the Middle East.

In the "treat the world as if everyone is a moron" department, MBS has promised that "those responsible will be brought to justice:rolleyes:

Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has described the killing of Jamal Khashoggi as a "heinous" crime, in his first comments since some of his closest aides were implicated in the Saudi journalist 's death.

Speaking at an investors' conference Riyadh that has been overshadowed by the crisis, bin Salman said those responsible for the killing would be brought to justice.

Of course this just means that some poor sap(s) will take the fall for this, leaving the true culprit to carry on as usual....

One has to wonder if there will be any justice meted out for this crime?:

Half the population of war-torn Yemen - 14 million people - are facing "pre-famine conditions", the UN has warned.

Humanitarian co-ordinator Mark Lowcock said survey work showed the number entirely reliant on aid for survival was three million higher than thought.

There was a clear danger of a famine "much bigger than anything any professional in this field has seen during their working lives", he added.

Medics say the number of deaths linked to food-related factors is rising.

Yemen has been devastated by a conflict that escalated in 2015, when a Saudi-led coalition intervened after the rebel Houthi movement seized control of much of the west of the country and forced President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi to flee abroad.

At least 6,660 civilians have been killed and 10,560 injured in the war, according to the UN. The fighting and a partial blockade by the coalition have also left 22 million people in need of humanitarian aid, created the world's largest food security emergency, and led to a cholera outbreak that has affected 1.1 million people.

As bad as the Kashoggi assassination was, this is the real "heinous crime" that MBS and his family are responsible for.

Killed journalist Jamal Khashoggi's children, some of whom are dual US citizens, are reportedly barred from leaving Saudi Arabia

Fking pathetic country if that is indeed true. I can't wait for the day for that regime to be toppled.

In other news, water is wet.  When you tell the truth, there is no need to change the story.  This is a lot closer to the truth than the previous narratives the d-bags from Saudi Arabia were trying to sell.

Basically Saudi Arabia is like...

'Yep, we did it and there is nothing any of you are going to do about it.'

They're probably having a good giggle about each different story they come up with.

The human life has a price and the US is just one of the many countries that are bought and paid for.

Kashoggi's fiancee is the latest in a long line of people who have said "no thanks" to an invitation to the WH, to meet with Captain Combover:

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-45989356

Quote

Hatice Cengiz told Turkish TV she thought the invitation was aimed at influencing public opinion in the US.

Khashoggi was murdered in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul three weeks ago.

Riyadh denies the ruling royal family was involved and blames "rogue agents".

Saudi Arabia initially denied all knowledge of the journalist's fate.

In a New York Times column earlier this month, Ms Cengiz said that if Mr Trump made "a genuine contribution to the efforts to reveal what happened inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul that day, I will consider accepting his invitation".

Unfortunately the only way for Saudis to change, is internally without outside assistance.

Anytime regime is changed or attempted to be changed from the outside, results are terrible.

Just look at Syria, Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan etc.
