Tell me im wrong. Edler is Worth 5 years @ 7.5 - 8 million per

I wish you could tell me I'm wrong I really wish I was. And I know that some of you will tell me that I am and wont explain but I will tell you why I believe this.

 

Erik Karlsson 29, Tyler Myers 29, Jake Gardiner 28, And last but not least Alex Edler 33. This is the Ufa defencemen class of of 2019 that is it there are no others like them tier 2 defencemen is a major drop off lead by Anton Stralman 32 years old 17pts, Braydon Coburn 34  23pts, Ben Chariot 28 and 20pt, and Jorden Benn 31 22pts. The rest of this class of UFA defencemen are over agers lead by Kronwell 38 and Hainsey also 38 after that it's trash Del Zotto anyone.

 

But this is not the full reasoning other factors are; the Cap is expected to raise to 83mill for this season, the cost of top tier defencemen are going up aka Drew Doughty which means EK is going to be north of 10 mill per. His injury might have him at 10mill but most likely not, which drives up the 2nd tier of defencemen. Then you have to look at Myers and Gardiner both are younger but both put up fewer pts then Edler, not only by points but point per game as well. Edler this season was #10 in mins per game played @ 24:38, for Myers and Gardiner I didn't even find them in the top 50 they didn't even lead there teams in this category.

 

Myers was 4th on his team per mins @ 20:21 and tied second in pts on defence with 2 other guys that missed 20 plus game more then Myers. My opinion on Myers stay far away from him he is a Product of a very good defence and is a top 4-5 defenceman at best on any other team I would pay him no more then 4.5 million per season. 

 

Gardiner. on the other hand 21:13 min per game, 2nd on his team in pts and mins played. But with no time on the PK and second on the pp at just under 2 mins per game. In my Opinion Gardiner is a solid #2 defenceman his worst case scenario is #3.

 

So why is Edler worth 5 years  7.5-8 million per season. Simply Gardiner And Edler are 2a and 2b in this years UFA class of Defencemen. And the only reason I believe Edler gets 5 years and not 7 is due to his age. If we want to keep Edler and only on 2 years JB is going to have to offer him 8 million per year and that could just be the starting point for edler to turn down a 5 year 36-40 million dollar offer on July 1, 2019.

 

Side note Luke Schenn gets an offer of 2-3 year deal @ 2.5-3 million per.

 

Side note: Ben Chariot @ 4-5 Years or Jorden Benn at @ 3 years @3.5-4.5 million is away better way to go.

 

So all you all know Edler on a 5 year contract means year 33,34,35,36,37 he would only be 38 years old if he plays in the playoffs in his last year of this contract.

So you want to pay what will be a 38 year old by the end of his contract 8 mil? He's not even playing a full season now. What makes you think that will not get any worse?

Please don't get me wrong I'm not saying I would pay this. What I'm saying is this is what I believe he will get on the open market and this is why he hasn't  signed yet.

Matters little what you're going to pay him (obviously you don't give him a Luongo like duration contract).  It's the protection clause that is the key (ie., expansion draft).

 

Give him a short term deal at an inflated rate (no protection clause that would force him to be 'protected' in an expansion draft).  If he really want's to stay, he'll sign that.

I think he hasn't signed yet because of the Seattle expansion. From what all of the sources have been saying, it's not about money at all. It's about whether or not he'll get a NMC and have to be protected come expansion draft.

Here’s a hint; look at how many players above the age of 35 are in the league. 

Then ask yourself if you really want to pay someone 10% of your salary allocation that will be declining hard as they move into the oldest players in the league category as the league gets younger and faster. 

 

 My personal opinion is that he’ll be lucky to get 5 million/season on a 3 year deal. And that teams will go no higher than 6 on a 1 or 2 year deal.

Edler will not make $7 million.

Edler will have to live without a NMC too if he wants to stay, Seattle won't even pick him up in 2021/22.

I would love to have him for another two years!
