[Report] Nichushkin on waivers for purpose of buyout

Last summer, winger Valeri Nichushkin was a key part of the offseason additions for the Stars.  Now, he’s on his way out the door.  Fox Sports Midwest’s Andy Strickland reports (Twitter link) that Dallas will be placing him on unconditional waivers for the purposes of buying out the final year of his contract.

Nichushkin had a rough year in 2018-19 to put it lightly.  He failed to score a single goal in 57 regular season games and went from seeing a bit of time in the top six to a depth role to basically out of the lineup altogether.  In their postseason run, he suited up just once in 13 games.  Needless to say, he didn’t come close to living up to the expectations of his two-year, $5.9MM contract.

I remember him being such a strong talent.  Any word on why it didn’t come together for him?  Even his KHL stats are pedestrian.  Initial reaction is to take a flyer but there must be something going on.

Edmonton will sign him for league minimum to play with McDavid...............

Could be a good low buy option for Vancouver if he sticks it out. Another rehab wouldn't be unreasonable given his draft potential. Do we want to risk having a Russian have a poor XP in Vancouver tho lol

Hard workers beat skilled guys if skilled guys don't work hard.

NHL is full of hard workers.

Oddly enough, that was one of his strong points going into the draft, that he was a relentless hard worker, who can skate and shoot the puck.

Nichushkin is a tremendously gifted, big forward who has the skills and finesse of a Russian skater, but the grit, forecheck, and physicality of his North American counterparts.  If it weren’t for him being from Russia, he’d be lumped in with the Jones’, MacKinnon’s, and Drouin’s, of the draft.

He’s an effortless skater and uses his body to shield the puck effectively.  One aspect that stands out in his game is his willingness to crash the net.  He’s very shifty in tight spaces and uses his size in front of the goalie and along the boards
