I think currently, they are just experimenting with more options so later players could choose from them according to different situations.

They broke it down in the athletic today.  Basically when you are on your strong side (Right side for right shots, left side for left shots) it gives you more options.  When you skate towards the goal you can pass or shoot.  On the one timer side if you are facing the goal you can basically only shoot, if you want to pass you have to change your body position.  Playing on the strong side encourages movement.  You're more static on the one timer side.  That was the gist of the article.
