[Proposal] Hughes for Subban, Ty Smith, TWO firsts & a 2nd

I’m not proposing this other than for a  concern that we may not have enough cash for Brock and later Miller/Horvat since we are right against the flat Cap. This proposal is also in reaction only if QH wants too much.

QH would be very sought after in Jersey for obvious reasons.

Subban is still a decent defenceman and will be off the books next year so there is no long term commitment.

Ty Smith is a former first round pick defenceman and is only 21 years old. He scored 23 points in his first year last season.

The two first round picks and a second round pick would re-stock that cupboard for the future.

I believe we would still be very competitive while regaining high picks.

I’m not sure if I’m undervaluing or overvaluing QH in this proposal but I think this would be fair for both sides.

Pass.

The problem with this deal is that the Canucks take a step back for this coming season, and that’s not something Benning would be willing to do.....nor is it something that he should be doing given the core players’ demands to ice a more competitive team for this coming season.

Enough trying to trade the most exciting defenseman we have ever had.  I like hockey, I especially like to be entertained.   Quinn is almost as fun to watch as Bure was.  I think he is, and will be, much better on defense than many here think. 1 in 32 teams win a Stanley cup so I'm hopeful but mostly want to enjoy watching my team.  I enjoy watching Quinn more than any defenseman we've ever had.   If you want to watch Subban or Ty Smith or Parayko, you can watch New Jersey or St. Louis.  I am very excited about this team.

Go Canucks Go!

thank you, someone finally said it

No one “wants to”. It’s based on circumstances. Read the original post.

Don't see why Horvat, Miller and co will want to stick around though.  That trade for futures signals that Vancouver is not serious about winning and aren't looking to  maximise their prime.

As Pettersson candidly admitted, he wants to win and play for a team that can go far in the playoffs.  It's probably no different for Horvat, Miller and co.  They are going to have plenty of options in free agency.

Ty Smith was drafted the same year as Hughes and does not have his ceiling.  Those 1st round picks likely won't turn into players by the time Horvat, Miller have to decide about their future.

I just find it amusing that you think Montreal’s version of going all in would you be blowing $15m of cap space (which they don’t have) plus a 1st ++ on Miller snd a guy Bergevin already ran out of town ( and that was when Subban was still good)

I find it amusing you don't think that the Habs would be willing to go all in one year for a run.  I also find it amusing you can never seem to actually have fun and need to be so serious all the time. In fact, I also find it amusing your definition of "run out" was a 1-1 trade

But whatever it's supposed to be fun and now it isnt anymore.  Carry on Cap'n :P

In my almost 10 years here I can’t recall a single instance where this guy actually said a certain proposal would work for both teams.

The part I don't get is why we're taking bad money back. I get it for the Loui proposals.

Not sure if you read the original post.

Cap space is also another factor.

This proposal is pending QH asking for too much (otherwise I wouldn’t want him gone).  A huge contract will also compromise keeping Bo and Miller in the future.

Jersey would need space and we would also be getting one year of a serviceable defenceman in Subban (we will be down a defenceman if QH is gone). He is not a trash player like Louie so I wouldn’t compare the two.

Plus Ty Smith is another very young former first round defender with great upside that adds to the back end.

but you're asking guys like Bo to accept losing talent. Hughes really doesn't have much bargaining power as a 10.2.c

So, Benning keeps spreadsheets targeting exactly what he expects team salary and player salary to be, on 5+ years out, so how about we let him worry about how much we are going to have to pay everyone, and how to keep the team under cap?

I'd entertain this ONLY if Hughes expressly said he wants to go play with his brothers.
Smith, Shakir Muhammadullin (spelling?) and those picks would do it, since Shak likely has Tryamkin potential.

I don't think that Shakir is that much better then someone like Joni Jurmo for example.  Granted KHL is a better league then Liiga, and Shakir did have a better first year in the pros.  They're four months apart in birthdays (Jurmo is four months younger). It would be great to have someone like Shakir in the system as a lottery ball that could provide good value on the 3rd pairing one day, I just don't think it holds that much trade value.

Shakir, Damon Severson, Yegor Sharangovich and a 1st round pick would do it for me.

Shakir (can't spell his last name) as mentioned is a lottery ticket on defense with a 50/50 chance of panning out

Severson is a good sized d-man that's good on both ends of the ice

Sharangovich had a great rookie year, is Belorussian and would make for a good teammate for Podz and one day Klimovich

1st round pick would probably be in the 15-20 range for the Devils

I just don't see the appeal in getting Ty Smith back when we already have Jack Rathbone who is looking like he might step into that smaller offensive d-man spot.

YOU are delusional if you think the canucks will trade QH , hes the offensive defenseman the canucks been waiting for all these years LOL , some ppl on this forum live in dreamlands and make believe

Aucion tied a record one year for PPG for a D...Jovo has a couple of great seasons and scored a lot of goals for us in the dead puck era.  We had Reinhardt two years in a row on one leg and he was great.   Lidster still holds the record for points.  McCarthy, Lanz, Lumme etc... I guess we've craving a Coffey type but that's not what we have.   It's still too early too know what exactly we have.  Is he a third pairing PP specialist?  Or a legitimate top pairing D?  We don't know yet.  But get the excitement.  Skilled guy.

“If” the Hughes camp wanted way too much money or really expressed a desire to leave the team to play with his brothers, then Jersey still has to overpay A LOT for us to move him in my opinion.

It would have to really blow our socks off.  Zacha, Ty Smith, +.

We could then trade Boeser for a huge haul of top level prospects/picks in a year or let Miller walk two years from now if all worked out to keep the necessary cap space and just promote Garland/Podkolzin into the top 6.  In the meantime that forward depth would destroy the other teams in our division and that 3rd line would feast on the lesser opposition they would face.

We also have to consider that he is roomies with Petterson and really close with him.  For the guys in the room to lose a friend and franchise left D man the brass would have to show that we did it to win faster and absolutely destroyed the other team in the trade.

Miller-Petterson-Boeser

Zacha-Horvat-Hoglander

Podkolzin-Dickenson-Garland

Pearson-Sutter-Motte

OEL-Hamonic

Smith-Myers

Rarhbone-Poolman

That forward group would take the sting out of losing Hughes.  Smith isn’t quite the offensive talent but is also a better defender.

Of course… it is never going to happen and Jersey would never do that deal…but that is the kind of deal it would take for me.
