Sending athletes to compete in the Chinese Olympics is indirectly supporting actions taken by the CCP. I am sympathetic of the Chinese people who are like most people in the world. Been there 3x and enjoyed meeting the people. Like most populations the people are used by their governments for questionable behaviours and actions. When they see athletes at their games it will reflect well on the CCP and they won’t care if the politicians show up or not. Canada in particular should not be sending athletes there. China has been very aggressive with their foreign policy towards Canada. Dictating terms, uttering economic threats and actually kidnapping 2 Canadian citizens isn’t enough? China hasn’t been above spending money in Canadian political elections as evidenced in the last federal election. Yet we send athletes there. CCP violated treaty and took over direct political control of HongKong. Canadian citizens there were arrested and are in prison without charge or trail. We can run a competition using the infrastructure left over from 2010 to hold a global event with other boycotting nations that would be just as exciting to watch from a competition pov. I hate the idea of rewarding Xi and his minions for their brutal behaviour. Their communications department sounds like a bot from 80's East Germany. Not only that, but I don't have any confidence that Canadian athletes will be safe in China. Just today, a Chinese official made the claim that Kovrig and Spavor "confessed to crimes" before their release.
