Five years and Seven mill

If oilers keep Smith for 5 more years, Rutherford should offer them chipping in a few hundred bucks per year to help out with his contract.

MacKinnon did a great job of setting a culture where guys take less as opposed to McDiver who set a culture where playing defence is completely optional.

Yup, agree completely!

Personally, I wouldn't trade Makar straight up for Nurse.

Nurse is a good defenseman, but he's not an Elite Defenseman, even though he's being paid now as one.

Actually he signed his contract before he 'emerged'. He was one of the first of the new age players to get a large second deal vs a bridge, and took the security of term.

He signed a 7 year deal starting in  the 2016/17 season

In the seasons prior he had

63 pts in 82 games

38 pts in 64 games

52 pts in 72 games

He arguably was being overpaid then but being paid for the future. Then he became underpaid because of how salaries inflated so fast....so less of a conscious decision and more lucky for the Avs and he's on a huge discount for 2 more years. Then he's getting McDavid money.

Omg this is all I hear in Toronto.   He’s been a lifelong Toronto fan. Blah blah blah.

I'm sure the Laffs fans will get their wish one day, They all go join that beer hockey team once they are washed up and close towards retirement.

Still just happy Mike Smith went out like a b&tch.

Can’t stand him. He has an arrogance to him that you don’t see too much in goalies. And it is completely unearned as he hasn’t won crap.

Yet somehow he had made Team Canada.

Agreed with post.

ah yes, read the site wrong...that will help create some more parity for us, they're going to have alot of money tied up in 5-6 players, so their depth will suffer.

All Canadian teams out.

Bettman is grinning his little grin somewhere deep in his lair.

You look at the Oilers team, there are NO easy decisions for them to build for next season.

They probably need to move Keith, which would be next to impossible unless they are attaching another asset and convincing him to waive.

They probably need to buyout Nurse (yes, I know next season is the first of his new contract), there is no way he's worth 9.25 million per season, 7 maybe.

They better hope that Klefbom doesn't come back or they're going to have about 3 million to find a capable goalie and round out the lineup.

Trade McJesus, anyone???

They should give that some serious thought. Instead, they’ll double down and sign Kane.
