[Waivers] 64 players - Oct. 09, 2022

CapFriendly's overview is not up to date.  They don't track off-season rosters/cap space and make assumptions on where players will end up - in the off-season every player under contract is on the NHL roster before being assigned to the different leagues, but as CapFriendly focuses on the opening roster they make some guesses.  For example Joshua is shown in the AHL but he requires waivers and wasn't waived.

They only show 11 Fs including Boeser and Mikheyev who are injured.  They have 8 Ds but Myers and Dermott are unlikely to be available for opening night.

Papering down Kuzmenko would near double his cap hit.  In LTIR the 7.5% bonus cushion is removed, so they have to  account for the bonus when they recall a player.  If he is on the opening roster Kuzmenko's cap hit is 950K but if he is papered down they need 1.8M in cap space to bring him back up after applying LTIR.  They did that with Höglander the divisional season where he was papered down for the opening roster so they could maximise LTIR - instead of a cap hit of 892K he had a 1.125M cap hit that season.

thanks @mll

So is there any way to claim P. Myers without the Canucks having to make another trade?

If P Myers falls to VAN…

Waive T Myers, Pearson and Poolman

Add P Myers and Aman to opening roster. This puts us within a few $1000 of cap limit.

You do know the need to be claimed to save us some cap, right? B)

Each of those contracts will be assigned the maximum cap relief for a buried contract, which is $1.125m for this season.

So 3 x 1.125m plus $60k in cap space brings us to $3.435m space.

Add P Myers (2.55) and Aman (0.885) which is $3.434m.

If any of them are actually claimed off waivers then I will be happy with that

But more likely is that we get full $3.5m LTIR for Ferland and can bring back whichever players we want onto the roster.

Lots of good players on waivers, but Phillip Myers is the guy we need.  He size, physicality and speed match what we need.  The fact that he could keep up with Hughes could make him a younger D partner that could mold his game around Quinn.  At worst he will be a physical 3rd pairing guy.  Make the cap work and maybe we end up with this mid-season at 5on5:

Hughes - P Myers

OEL - Schenn

Stillman - T Myers

That is a much tougher D core than before.

Waiver wire to Canucks first pairing. Sounds like Canuck’s D.

haha very true.  In this case he would act like a younger Schenn.  Complimentary pairing with Hughes but obviously not on the PP or the same amount of mins.  I still see them overloading OEL and Hughes if we are down in games too.

Also we don’t need to clear like 12 million to add Myers

I wouldn’t expect any team to claim those 3 players, so we would just get the buried contract relief of $1.125m per contract,

The other point to my post is that we would be able to maximise Ferlands LTIR if we made those moves for our opening season roster.
