[3-Way Trade] Bruins acquire Dmitry Orlov, Garnet Hathaway, Andrei Svetlakov; Capitals acquire Craig Smith, 2023 1st-round pick, 2024 3rd-round pick, 2025 2nd-round pick; Wild acquire 2023 5th-round pick

Maybe Ovechkin is okay with that.  He got his cup.  I think all he cares about now is breaking Gretzky's record...

And the further they get into the playoffs (if they make it) the greater the wear and tear he'll be dealing with, which will reduce his chances of matching/passing that record.  Makes sense.

It's awesome sitting back and watching teams that waited until closer to the deadline get the hauls wed hoped Horvat was going to bring.

But if we were to trade down via the islanders pick the value is greater on our end than what this 1st 2nd and 3rd is. Especially once you consider the value that could come from the other two pieces. A 26+ pick, a 55+ pick 78+ pick couldn't get you a 13-16 pick.

As I referenced above the AZ SJ trade:

11 for 27 + 34 + 45.

It's pretty easy to see we got more value initially but now it all comes down to if anything for anyone pans out

We got a "higher" 1st, got a 2nd round equivalent prospect. If/when we move Schenn, that will likely net us another pick in which these other deals have included another player. How are these hauls better?

Because we took on a 25 year old "cap dump" winger that has 7 points in 8 games so far?

That would be good, but just remember we can only retain on 3 contracts maximum (so 2 more along with Horvat's one). The typical return on retaining 25% salary on an in/out rental contract (like Orlov or O'Reilly) is a 4th or 5th round pick - so not amazing.

Think we can do a lot better by taking on whole player contracts that contenders want to move out (maybe for a 2nd or 3rd round pick). There's no limit on those as long as you have the cap space. But unfortunately not many contenders have those kind of contracts...

Good point!

buy some picks and then use those picks as a sweetener to unload pearson and Myers

Aside from the feedback you're getting from some of the other posters, the real headscratcher for me from your post is that you've been quite vocal about your preference of established players or players on their way to being established instead of picks.  Many of these trades involve the picks that you seem to shun as somewhat worthless.

If those picks are normally deemed worthless to you, how are they better hauls than what we got (comparatively) in the Horvat trade?

Just being curious.

the way you guys say 13-16 pick like it's guaranteed.. right now that pick is sitting at 20th based on the actual standing and not point %.. sure teams have games in hand.. but again until they win those games it means nothing on the actual standing. pittsburgh had a bunch of games in hand on the islanders and lost back to back to the islanders literally a 8 point swing. washington have given up on this season.. so now it's really going to be pittsburgh florida islanders fighting for the last 2 spot.. detroit will fall off once they sell off larkin and buffalo maybe a wild card... if we end up with a 20th pick.. chances are it's just a luck of the draw what we pick and what we get.
