the way you guys say 13-16 pick like it's guaranteed.. right now that pick is sitting at 20th based on the actual standing and not point %.. sure teams have games in hand.. but again until they win those games it means nothing on the actual standing. pittsburgh had a bunch of games in hand on the islanders and lost back to back to the islanders literally a 8 point swing. washington have given up on this season.. so now it's really going to be pittsburgh florida islanders fighting for the last 2 spot.. detroit will fall off once they sell off larkin and buffalo maybe a wild card... if we end up with a 20th pick.. chances are it's just a luck of the draw what we pick and what we get.

Detroit won’t be selling. Yzerman came out and stated how important it is to get their young guys playoff experience.

If anything they’ll be adding cheaper depth. They’re as much in the mix for the wild card as the Isles.

The wild are doing a good job acquiring some picks being a cap bank. We should be doing this with some deals. I think we can only retain two more contracts (we are retaining Bo this year) so we could hopefully get another 4th in a similar deal. Lost season, might as well play bank broker and add some more picks plus the Schenn deal should net us at least a 3rd. Let’s help out those teams for those futures!

I would have tried for a 3rd to take on Smith for the end of the season.

Vancouver could still utilize their two retention slots around Boeser and Myers.

They won’t, they’ll re-sign him.

Both sides want to get a deal done.

Listened to Larkin on an NHL Network interview. He didn't seem concerned and felt a deal will be signed to stay in Detroit.

With both Barzal and Pageau out, the Islanders may struggle during the next few weeks. Have to see how that

pans out for them.  Also, I think Buffalo would really like to get their team into the playoffs.  They're on the verge

of breaking out and need some playoff game experience.  Like Detroit, they have a lot of cap space to make

a couple of solid acquisitions.

if they can just stay above .500 while bazal is out they'll be fine sorokin have been a rock in goal for them this season. and they've won 2 tough games since barzal is out. while buffalo and Detroit would love to get some playoff reps in.. they'll be stupid to be paying assets to acquire players just for experience when they have no chance at winning a cup

As long as it doesn't hamper our ability to retain on contracts we might want to move out (max of 3 retained salary contracts and we already have 1); or use up enough cap space to limit our ability to sign NCAA/European players right towards the end of the season, then YES let's get a couple of extra 4th rounders.

Barzal is out indefinitely, so will hinge a lot on whether he is even back this regular season too.

i mean replace barzal with Horvat they'll just be back to where they were pre-trade. Horvat actually out produced barzal this season at EV. so they'll likely still be floating around the WC spot unless a team goes on a tear

Nothing to do with Svechnikov.  At least, as far as I'm aware.  :bigblush:

My question is, do the retentions still count at the draft? The season and playoffs have ended but the draft still technically is a part of the 2022/2023 season which we would still have Bo and as @Mike Vanderhoekhas said possibly Boeser and Myers being retention candidates. So while acquiring another 4th would be good for us, keeping retention slots around the draft would be wise. Like you said college free agents is another avenue. Better to keep our contract limit down so we can pick up a few diamonds in the rough (Jake Livingstone please!) very good points BTF, cheers to that. Will be interesting what we end up doing with our cap space, retention slots and contract limit.
