If Twitter disappears, would you quit social media all together?

Twitter is only useful for sports and porn, but other medias can cover this.

Twitter is so depersonalized that it isn't even used for friends.

Is twitter even good for that? Isn't that what the 'hub' is for?

I like twitter for news and sports. If you follow the right people it can be good for educational content.

If Twitter disappears it will be due to the mismanagement of Musk. I doubt it would ever disappear as some hedge fund would gladly buy it for 1/4 of what Dumb Dumb paid for it.

White Twitter is an undeniable cesspool, it is also the fastest way to disseminate news that there is. If it did disappear something similar would appear in short order.

Social media is like alcohol. It's great in moderation. Over indulge and you become walking, talking ***hole.

Twitter is a place where you get more engagement posting reductive/extremist/reactionary content than if you were to post intelligent/rational commentary. No matter how many times they increase the character limit it is still the dumbest tweets that get the most likes/retweets. The only way it will disappear is if humanity as collective became a whole lot smarter. And imho since the advent of social media, it seems to me that we are headed in the other direction, that doesn't seem like very likely at all. My prediction is that Twitter will outlive us all and will progressively get worse and worse with the passage of time.

I have an account and have never tweeted or messaged anyone. I just lurk and have bookmarks for hockey and political stuff. It has never occurred to me to like or retweet or any of those other things I can't be bothered to understand or even care about. If Twitter disappeared, there will be something new and shiny where I can lurk and have bookmarks for hockey and political stuff. I am a simple man trying my best to live an uncomplicated but fulfilling life. No Twitter, no cry.

Don't really use Twitter. I have an account, but don't really see the benefits of reading random celebrity thoughts. For news I still go to the websites of news providers.

Instagram is probably the one I use the most. Still Facebook for the marketplace, occasional messaging, and quick scrolls through my feed. Was in some groups, but those are all pretty toxic and full of scammers.

But yes, overall social media is not as exciting as it was. I still like the ability to get major updates from people I never see anymore. Whatsapp has pretty much replaced the group message function of Facebook though.

If you know how to use Twitter properly, it can be a valuable tool for real time updates for sports, news, and other things that you may have interest in.  You just need to know how to navigate through it and make sure to avoid the cesspool that there is.

If you know how to use Twitter you can get information alot quicker than if you just randomly use the internet and go directly to webpages.  You need to follow alot of people and companies though in order for Twitter to work properly for you, as this is the way that tweets will show up on your feed.  If you are not following anybody, then Twitter is basically useless as you would need to constantly do searches to find what you are looking for, which is similar to just using Goggle search.

Twitter is all about getting as much information as possible in the shortest period of time.

FYI, Vintage Canuck gets all of his information from Twitter, so if you are using this site then you are basically using Twitter and getting all of the benefits from it just by logging in.  VC is helping you to get all of your Canucks news in one easy to use website.  And that information is mostly coming from Twitter itself...

I only use Twitter to keep tabs on the Ukrainian war. Otherwise, I hardly use social media to begin with.

That being said, I don't see why it would make me quit social media altogether. Twitter's just 1 platform of many. It just happened to be a popular platform but, otherwise, it's nothing special in my mind.

Honestly, if Twitter went down, people would simply use something else I think.

Hardly the only platform out there, and there's always Facebook right?

There would certainly be another platform to take over.

The amount of engineers who have been fired would be hired elsewhere by another billionaire or Hedge Fund backed company to fill the void.

Perhaps they’d be more socially responsible than Twitter and it’s recent odious Musk.

However, the world needs less toxic ways for all of us to shit on each other, imo.

Social media is a scourge. It shouldn’t have been, because there many positives about information sharing, but it’s a reflection of most of our worst natures.

Social media is a technology that humanity isn’t always ready for because we’ve become socially de-evolved.

Just my own thoughts and opinion.

Yup. Do we, the average person, need information so quickly as Twitter can provide? Is it really that important. I guess some things are, but most aren’t. Maybe people are living too fast and not smelling the roses? Or like on Mayberry RFD not peeling the apple?

Some things are for sure.

But, I find social media to be less about sharing information as it is about other toxic aspects to people of all ages and backgrounds.

What a waste of technology when it’s used for ‘wrong’ or ‘evil’ purposes.

Again, it’s a reflection of ‘us’. The Good, Bad, & Ugly.

Very wise. I just don’t know how we can control things like Twitter? Radio and TV were so much easier to monitor and keep control over. I just don’t see we can fo that with something like Twitter.

No one can control it.

It’s literally ‘Kitty bar the door’.

The horses are out of the barn.

The best that can happen now is regulation…which to some is more evil than what they propagate on social media.
