[Rumour] Dahlin Close to Signing Extension in Buffalo

Recommended Posts

Take it for what you will.  Dahlin expected to sign a near $10 million contract as soon as is possible.  Chad broke or has broken news on a few large contract extensions for Buffalo like Cozens and Samuelson and this will make Dahlin the new face of the franchise and will have set the new ceiling for defence contracts in the league.  $10 million over 8 years.

Powers is expected to be extending in short order behind this and the Dahlin contract is the first and most domino to fall before that happens.  Powers don't forget ranked 2nd in all NHL defencemen in 5v5 ice time and his extension is expected to be comparable to Dahlins bridge.

Some information and a breakdown on how this signing and the Powers extension along side Thompson is expected to impact the Sabres moving forward

For reference.  Here is how the Sabres current cap stands and how their front end looks prior to expending Dahlin and Powers.  Will be interesting watching them juggle this moving forward with Cozens and Skinner.  Without mentioning the increase in pay Tuch, Mitlestadt and Jokiharju will be getting whgile still needing a goalie.  Still have a solid amount of prospects and some quality picks over the next 2 seasons but that's getting to be a bit of a top heavy team.  They're just lucky enough to have gotten two 1st overall picks that were and are 1st pairing defensemen.

They're going to need to be very, very careful in the coming years they don't end up in a situation like the Coilers - where years of high draft picks have them paying huge amounts of their cap to only a few guys on the team and then they'll struggle to ice a complete, deep line-up and they won't be able to afford an elite goalie with experience.

Doesn't have to be, Dahlin has one more season at 6M and will have to sign a contract sooner than later if he wants to continue playing. Hughes has another four offseasons of cap increases to drive up what he'll get. Hughes will benefit from such increases the way other top end players will.

In 4 years, Hughes will easily be a $10 million player.  He might even win the Norris trophy during that time...

dahlin....is set to sign an 8 year max contract.

He leads Hughes in almost every possible metric except direct points.

Dahlin is the superior defenseman right now.  It's inarguable.  Hughes will get a huge contract for sure due to cap increases, but he's not getting this contract today

Agreed, but I wasn't saying he would. I said Hughes can start dreaming about the 10M+ payday he'll get, because he will get it if he maintains his current level of play or improves upon it. We've precious little in the system as far as blue chip D prospects go, it's highly unlikely we'll have anything resembling a Hughes coming up any time soon, Hughes will likely have this team by the balls.

He will not be a Norris level player unless he puts up godly numbers offensively (like Karlsson).  Defensively, he lags behind counterparts of his age.  With more complete players like Makar, Fox, and Dahlin, the best he can probably get is a nomination.

And I'm content with that.  Hughes is still a top 10 D-man in the league and he is great value for our team.

Not gonna happen.

I'll be surprised if Pettersson extends this summer at all, more than likely his agent will want to see what next offseason's incoming cap jump looks like. Only way I see it getting done is if management pays high in advance to reflect that incoming jump.

10M is likely a pipe dream.

Hughes has already had 9 Norris trophy votes in his career, Dahlin has had zero.  They are both getting lots of votes this year.  Hughes defence has improved greatly from last year when he received 9 votes.  He had more points than Dahlin this year, better +/-, played more minutes on the PK.  Hughes is 49th in on ice expected GAA, Dahlin is 115th.  Hughes is 113 in on ice high danger shot attempts, Dahlin is at 98.

They are closer than you think...

Yeah, I love Hughes, but Dahlin is way more complete of a defenceman.  6'3" 202lbs, great skater, great vision, great shot, logs huge minutes, can play in all situations, definitely capable of putting up 20+ goals and 80+ points in his prime.  He's a true franchise #1 defenceman, no questions asked.

Hughes is the much better player. Dahlin is a dumbo.
