Sam Gagner, why the hate?

Del Zotto looked like he was afraid of the puck. Why not attack the puck when you know McDavid all alone and the Oilers are on a line change? Not like anyone else could catch up to the play in time for a chance.

Otherwise, the only reason I can think of Gagner not putting much effort is that he was at the end of a shift with not much gas left in the tank.

You can clearly see that Del Zotto was surprised when he saw Gagner call him over. Again, Gagner should have kept his feet moving and he could have then chipped it over to Del Zotto to transition back up. Instead, he brain farts which forced Del Zotto to react and come over, but it was too late.

Inconsistent is what Sam Gagner is. Defensive blunders all around.

He looked indifferent a lot of the time last season.  My main objection is he's not good enough to play in the top 6, but he's too soft and weak defensively to play in the bottom 6.  He's a pretty good bet to lose his job to one of the kids though.  He will be decent Utica depth if all goes well.

Ding, ding, ding.  Pretty much exactly what I would have written, though with a little more sardonic wit.

He was where good passes went to die last year.

Plus he still has the Oiler stink on him.

A classy player in the locker room and  a good person all around I’m thinking last year was an off year I’m willing to bet this guy turns it around. I’m pulling for him,  he is a Canuck and until he is otherwise I will support him.  No more ripping into one of ours for I have learnt my lesson from the Vey fiasco he deserved better.

I'd rather give that money to Dorsett or Weise and watch them run around the ice.

Gagner was brought in to be a PP specialist and provide secondary scoring. It's clear he was overrated in that regard coming off a career high season.

I wouldn't even mind it if wasn't completely obvious the dude thinks he's a premier scorer. He tries things above his pay grade which often result in turnovers or fumbled pucks.

I really enjoyed the fact that Gagner was waived the same day as Weise. You could've had your wish!

He'd make a great player coach in Utica. Nobody has cap room for his contract.

Like a modern day Reggie Dunlop.  I really don't think he has a future in North America as a player though.  Maybe as a coach in the Federal League?

Just out of curiosity, why is there so much negativity around Gagner?  I'm not sure what you expect from a player with a $3.15M cap hit.

He put up 10 goals and 31 points in 73 games last season.  For players making between 3M and 3.5M, he was 3rd, trailing only Josh Bailey and Charlie Coyle.

If he was making $4M+, then yes, I can understand... but for $3.15M, I'm not sure you can expect much more than 25 to 30 points per season...

Not a single NHL team wants him, I think that says enough without having to breakdown his many deficiencies.

To be fair about things, its actually benning who should be getting the hate for gifting these to high of term contracts. None of his off season signings have been good at all.  The length of years the overpayments Benning has really crapped the bed in this department he hands out terrible unmovable contracts.

Sam Gagner is a nice guy its not his fault Benning offered that contract. And im sure loui eriksson agrees with that sentiment.

Because he sucked

3 million for 30 points?

Enough said, good riddance

You must be extra mad about eriksson then, Gagner had 8 more points then 6 mill Eriksson amazingly but Gagner gets the hate.

Awesome signing garbage and having to pass on real players..  but who needs evander kane. (7m/y) Lets get some eriksson and gagner instead for (9m/y)

Not happy about Loui BUT is defensive play is 100 times more effective than Gags and his effort level is 100 times better

*No teams want him prior to clearing waivers, at the start of the season while trying to sort out their own rosters/waivers, before injuries and with the possibility of salary retention once those things sort themselves out.

I actually have nothing at all against Gagner he wasn't as bad as many say. From where I sit there are just other players I felt outplayed him

in that they are faster and have equal offensive upside while being cheaper and more assertive on the D side of the puck. I honestly would not have been upset if Motte started in the A and Gags started on the 4th line on the big squad, however, I am thrilled that JB opted to use that spot on a player that earned the spot. It shows to the youth that if you work your ass off JB will make the hard choices to back up the talk.

Looks like we loaned him to Marlise as he wants to be close to his family.

Gagner basically got paid 12 million plus just to play one season of hockey in the NHL and 2 seasons of hockey helping mentor another teams prospects. That's the most did nothing for the Canucks signing since Messier.
