Mathew Barzal
I'd rather give that money to Dorsett or Weise and watch them run around the ice. Gagner was brought in to be a PP specialist and provide secondary scoring. It's clear he was overrated in that regard coming off a career high season. I wouldn't even mind it if wasn't completely obvious the dude thinks he's a premier scorer. He tries things above his pay grade which often result in turnovers or fumbled pucks. I'm not sure how pointing out his general ineffectiveness or nominating him as the most likely to be replaced by a prospect in the fall counts are "ire". "Ire" infers actual heated anger directed in some way and I haven't seen much of that.
Smashian Kassian
Don't hate him, he's a solid depth player, he's just expendable. He's probably one of the worst defensive forwards on the team, and he's not a top 6 player. 30 points isn't a bad season, that's what I was expecting from Gagner & that's what he delivered. But that's just what he is at this point, a depth offensive player. Atleast its him and not Megna/Chaput when injuries hit but he is taking up a spot that a younger guy could fill. Gagner was 7th among forwards. ie he was a backup for the 2nd unit that got that time primarily when Boeser, Baertschi, Vanek were injured.... Depends on what you claim our #1 unit was. 2017-2018 was a mishmash of Boeser/Horvat/Vanek/Sedins/Gagner for forwards 7th overall puts him at the top of a second unit or even into the 1st with Boeser's injury and Vaneks trade. He still averaged over 2 minutes per game on the Canucks PP and had many shifts where he stayed out after his whole line changed. He played 74 games which would equate to 150+ PP opportunities for only 3 goals. If he's nothing more than a PP specialist and thats all he offers he doesn't deserve to wear our uniform. mikeyman109
I think the issue with Gagner is that he was brought in to help our power play and he didnt have anything to do with the improvement last season. The difference in power play success went to Newell Brown , then the addition of Horvat in front of the net and Boeser shooting. Really Gagner was inconsistent and not much of a boost for the PP I dont think he is hated , he just isnt doing what he was brought in to do. The younger players could provide what Gagner does currently.

No - the simple fact of the matter is that Boeser lead the team in powerplay ice time. Your claim that Gagner took his ice time is....nonsense. For players making between 3M and 3.5M, he was 3rd, trailing only Josh Bailey and Charlie Coyle. That's highly misleading. There are all sorts of players who out-scored Gagne - and were paid far, far less. Also it's wrong - very, very wrong: Kyle Turris - $3.5m AAV, 51pts Mark Stone - $3.5m AAV, 62pts Cam Atkinson - $3.5 AAV, 46pts Vladimir Sobotka - $3.5 AAV, 31pts Lars Eller - $3.5 AAV, 38pts Eric Staal - $3.5m AAV, 76pts Andrew Cogliano - $3m AAV, 35pts Tomas Hertl - $3m AAV, 46pts Plus there were several others that scored 29 or 30pts. VIC_CITY
21 hours ago, aGENT said: I don't get it either. He's producing what should be expected for a $3mx 3 year player. He's here to literally be a warm body so a prospect or a Megna doesn't have to deal with playing above their heads, until he's no longer required. Nobody's trying to sell him as a super-awesome top 6 guy (nor is he being paid to be one). IMO, it's some people's entirely out of whack expectations. I wouldn't say it was unrealistic for Canucks fans to expect him to put up a few more points than he did, given he scored 50 points the year before. That's a 38% drop in production, so there's some validity to their disappointment, even if it may have been a long shot for Gagner to have a repeat season like that. I think the real reason most Canucks fans don't care for 2 more years of Gagner is because he's easily replaceable and we have several young players eagerly waiting in the wings. So I think Gagner will likely see plenty of time in the pressbox this year if things go as planned, as he's not really needed. I think we can all agree that we'd rather see any of Gaudette, Leipsic, Goldobin, Pettersson, Dahlen, hell even Reid Boucher over Sam Gagner. The future is now. wallstreetamigo
I know for me i dont see the Canucks in the position to need Gagner as a filler in the top 6 or on the PP anymore. Its debatable if he was needed last year but its a much weaker argument this year. He is pretty average. His cap hit is not a big deal really. If he was making half that i would still say he is expendable. I dont want to see us lose a young guy like Goldobin on waivers or in a dump trade just to keep a guy like Gagner to trot him out in our top 6 or on the PP, especially not in another throwaway season. Despite the negatives, Goldobin is not all the much worse defensively than Gagner and has a lot more creativity offensively and actually fits pretty well with several forwards. He may turn out to not reach his potential but i would rather see him given a real opportunity to do so before he is cast off. Guys like Gagner give Green - and Willie and Torts and AV before him - the built in excuse to use them as go to guys over giving a young guy that role to grow in. That can prove hard for those coaches to resist as we have seen for a long time. As a complementary, low minute, sheltered player, Gagner is fine. Just not imperative. Now that we have a young roster and are in a deep rebuild, go even younger and give the young kids a real opportunity to shine. Theres no harm unless you are a chicken little type who thinks all young players will be ruined if they have to face adversity.
