[Waivers] Yannick Weber

Recommended Posts

He never really got a fair shake. I'm more curious as to what this is indicative though. We're freeing up a roster spot for something... maybe it's just a call up, but we have 13 F and 7D for the first time all season, so I'm thinking it's likely a trade.

You mean, you're WISHING it's likely a trade.

I agree with the decision to keep Alberts over Weber - Alberts has a history of starting slowly but plays some dependable hockey as the season progresses regardless of how little ice time he had seen. He's also has a frame the Canucks could use down the stretch, whereas Weber's defensive play hasn't forced the issue. I think Alberts is a more important asset as a 7th man, and Corrado is a real deal kind of young player who undoubtedly forces Weber another step down the depth chart in due course.

Right now, the Canucks need more depth on the fourth line than they do an 8th defenseman.

Stealing Stanton also pretty much sealed Weber's fate as a depth scratch when this team is healthy.

Hard to argue with the move - but hope that Weber sticks with the franchise, because you never know, there's always the possibility of finding a role later in the season.

He'll probably be buried down there now, as I believe Gillis has always wanted Corrado as first call up.

Utica D is looking stacked again, with vets like Mullen, Weber and Huskins, should probably force more of our young D down to the K Wings.

I doubt the Canucks start sending their young guys down to the ECHL. Defeats the purpose of owning a AHL franchise. They haven't signed Huskins yet which I sure hope they do. Do you want Corrado or Weber anchoring the RD on the PP in Utica? I don't even know whether Weber has anything to offer as a mentor in Utica. Huskins yes. Weber has a two way I think so he might jump back to Euroland with the Canuck's blessing.

Weber was a money ball puck moving D / PP expert. He did get some PP shifts early. But he did not stand out, or give anyone any reason to give him that time instead of Bieksa. So he became a utility player while all our forwards were hurt. We still need a PP specialist and puck moving D. Weber was just not it.

Is that what he "was"?

Ok.

Bit more info

Vancouver Canucks’ Yannick Weber May Not Report To Utica Comets

Vancouver Canucks defenceman Yannick Weber may not report to the Utica Comets, according to News 1130 Sports.

The 25 year old defenceman cleared waivers on Tuesday morning and was officially assigned to the Comets so they could activate winger Dale Weise off injured reserve.

Needless to say, it is likely Weber is exploring his options in Europe before deciding whether to report or not.

A report from Switzerland suggests National League A teams might have interest. They suggest if Weber reports to the AHL, it could hurt his chances of making the Swiss national team for the 2014 Winter Olympics.

The Canucks could be exploring their trade options as well. Even though Weber cleared waivers, it doesn’t mean there is no interest in him.

He is making a cheap $650,000 this season and is a decent depth defenceman.

Teams likely just didn’t see or think of Weber highly enough enough to warrant using one of their 50 allowed contracts to add him. A one-for-one trade with another team for another ‘unwanted’ player is a possibility.

With such Powerplay woes as of late, I would have at least tried him out and give him a shot before sending him down to Utica. Dress him as the 12th forward and use him specifically for special teams.

Yea ... one would think his slapper would be more useful than hamhuis on the point.
