I've been noticing that Marky's save percentage has snuck up a little bit. Sure enough, in the month of March, Markstrom has a .923 save percentage so far. Although he still lacks consistency, it's good to see some improvement at least. Last year he had a .910 save percentage as a backup and this year, he's at .912 so far as the starter. Not great numbers, but it's an improvement at least.

Is there pressure right now?  I wonder if the lack of pressure is allowing Marky to relax, and play better?  It’s like being a backup - less pressure.  I hope he learns that he’s really good, when he relaxes, and just plays.

Markstrom has had a really good season, good to see for his first full year as a starter.

Compare to Ryan Miller's time as a Canuck

2014-15 Vancouver Canucks NHL 45 0 0 2542 107 5 6 2.53 29 15 1 1091 0.911 3 0 0
2015-16 Vancouver Canucks NHL 51 1 2 3027 137 13 1 2.70 17 24 9 1497 0.916 - - -
2016-17

Vancouver Canucks

NHL 54 1 22 3229 150 0 3 2.80 18 29 6 1587 0.914

Markstrom this year

2017-18 Vancouver Canucks NHL 58 3 4 3286 147 0 2 2.68 21 26 6 1540 0.913

Overall, pretty similar..........but he has been hot as of late so that bumped him up.

The big knock are the bad or untimely goals, but if he can improve on this and maintain a solid GAA and Save % he will do well for this team.

I like Markstom. I think he'll be a great tandem goalie once Demko is up here. If we had another capable guy to slide in when he's having cold streaks, it would be perfect.

Another couple years. Until then we just need to be patient ;)

Marky looked better as the season wore on. I think he'll be better next year, more mentally prepared.

Yeah, He finished with a higher save percentage than last year. Still not great, but an improvement while also doubling his usual number of games played is a good sign. If he improves at all next year (along with some good defense maybe), he'll actually make Demko work for his full-time job.

If we'd had "that" Markstrom all year, we probably wouldn't have been battling in the bottom-6.  Despite all the early and soft goals, he actually had similar numbers to Miller's last year:

Markstrom: 2.71/.912

Miller (16/17): 2.80/.914

Markström will not play in the world championship.

Whole article in one sentence translated here:

after a really good season in Vancouver he needs to Rehab to come back stronger for the next season

There will so so many ?s at camp this year. Most will be about our very shiny new toys. There will be a number of ?s about veterans. Eriksson, Gaunce, Sutter and Markstrom. Markstrom, after years of grooming, kind of dropped the ball in his bid to be a #1 goaltender. Too many early goals and too many games with a soft goal.

2018/ 19 is, I believe, the make or break year for JM. He has the ability. Can he make ability into reality ?

We'll soon see whether he can or not. But as of today. He doesn't really have anyone pushing him hard for the number one spot. It's basically just given to him. Hoping that Demko has someone pushing him so that's there competition and drive to be better every day.

For a long time the book on markstrom has been weak glove hand. Tonight, that glove hand looked very solid. He was snagging pucks all over the place. In traffic, off clear shots, on the shoot out. Makes me think he's worked on it this offseason or made some kind of adjustment. Very encouraging to see.

Rebound control looked solid as well.

Looking like a back up goalie.

Not that he played amazing (he didn't) but the 5th goal was the only truly 'bad' goal. The others were all deflections or massive defensive breakdowns in front of him where Carolina did their best Harlem Globetrotters impersonation/he had little chance on.

People are being WAY too reactionary and looking for someone to blame.

reactionary?

he is 3rd in the league in first shot goals allowed ?

that is a long standing issue, so not at all a reactionary response by fans

this was clearly a problem that hurt the team last season

and was commented upon often

and it looks to be repeating this season

do not underestimate how much that hurts a team

being so unsure about their starting goalie

that they have to play mistake free hockey

cuz he cannot bail them out

and the commentary regarding last night really focused on first shot goals

what about the number of 2nd shot goals

and the high number of just weak goals

when the game is still in the balance

he simply lacks high level consistency

when he has a few strong games in a row people think he has turned the corner

but he has not

too often the team starts off behind in a game (1st, 2nd, 3rd shot goals)

due to weak goaltending

Yes reactionary. And again, nobody's suggesting he's a Vezna candidate.

He didn't let in the '1st shot of the game' in the first game so far this year and the one that went in last night was deflected. Excrement happens.

We often start behind because we're a rebuilding team with everything that entails (including, but not exclusive to, mediocre goaltending).

sorry man

most of what you post has a reasonable basis

but this is all just weak

you note goaltending is mediocre

marky is our key goaltender

he lets in a bad one last night

you wish to quibble about which one it was

stats show he lets in almost the most 1st goals in the league

he did again last night

goaltending and d are a problem on this team.. that is not in dispute

but commenting on marky last night is reactionary?

ok then
