[Trade] Nathan Horton to Leafs for David Clarkson

Recommended Posts

Yea... What on earth where they thinking? Maybe if Leafs covered 30% salary...

Nonis pulls another steal. Wow this guys a good gm.

A good GM would have never signed Clarkson to that ridiculous contract in the first place. This is a Nonis version of wiping dog crap off his shoe after he stepped in it.

Credit to him for not retaining salary but it is pretty clear they are simply allowing him to tear down the mistakes he made before moving forward with a new GM.

Wow...shocked that someone would take on Clarkson's contract. Head scratcher for Jarmo K., unless he and JD absolutely believe there is something to be gained with Clarkson in their line up. They have cap space for the balance of this year and next season (especially if they unload Wiz, and let Leopold and Letestu walk) even with extensions with bigger cap numbers for Dubinsky, Foligno and Bobrosky. Head scratcher at best.

Great move by Nonis...burying Horton on LTIR and getting rid of Clarkson? Who would have thought that he could pull that off? I suppose anything is possible...he did, after all, steal Luongo from the Panthers for the Canucks.

Columbus GM could probably flip Clarkson later, if he dipped into his stash of prospects, AND took back another dog.

EG, to Edm: Clarkson & Wennberg.

for: Pouliot/Nikitin & maybe a 2nd rounder.

It's a creative way to end up saving about 15~20 mill, after both transactions. The 2 Cdn markets can recompense such foolish commitments.

Even if I have no beef with GMMG, it just seems fitting to say that Gillis would probably have dragged out the decision to make the trade for a year or two until he had solved the problem. Nonis got it "fixed" faster and swept it under the rug before it got messy.

Columbus was Paying 5.3 for Horton to not play now they are paying the same money for someone to play even though it is not a high end player they are getting production atleast...Toronto was going to be paying that contract for the next few years now they get to put Horton on LTIR and use the cap hit else where, IMO give each team a need they were looking for and if by some miracle Horton recovers Toronto made the right move

So....insuring a players contract against LT injury/retirement is optional for each NHL team?

Really?

The Leafs are the kinda team who would then I suppose. Way more "have" then the Jackets

Surprised that's not a league wide policy though....

It's strange that his contract wasn't insured. Don't think it was team option. Considering Horton's injury history prior to contract signing, it may have been difficult to secure insurance on it, period.

So they went on the MLSE insurance plan.

Now will they compliance buyout Clarkson? Perhaps.
