Jiggs50
Clarkson will do much better in Columbus imo. Less pressure and gets to play with Johansen most likely.
Derp...
Well Toronto just signed and paid Clarkson to trade him for nothing. Pretty solid
Rodzilla131
Everyone praising Nonis for this trade? He's the idiot that gave Clarkson that contract in the first place. Bingo!
drdeath
We would rather pay somebody else not to play for us than pay Clarkson. Great signing there Nonis.
LM11
I bet Clarkson plays much better in Columbus. Not the amount he makes, better but still much better
wallstreetamigo
Yea... What on earth where they thinking? Maybe if Leafs covered 30% salary... Nonis pulls another steal. Wow this guys a good gm. A good GM would have never signed Clarkson to that ridiculous contract in the first place. This is a Nonis version of wiping dog crap off his shoe after he stepped in it. Credit to him for not retaining salary but it is pretty clear they are simply allowing him to tear down the mistakes he made before moving forward with a new GM. bigbadcanucks
Wow...shocked that someone would take on Clarkson's contract. Head scratcher for Jarmo K., unless he and JD absolutely believe there is something to be gained with Clarkson in their line up. They have cap space for the balance of this year and next season (especially if they unload Wiz, and let Leopold and Letestu walk) even with extensions with bigger cap numbers for Dubinsky, Foligno and Bobrosky. Head scratcher at best. Great move by Nonis...burying Horton on LTIR and getting rid of Clarkson? Who would have thought that he could pull that off? I suppose anything is possible...he did, after all, steal Luongo from the Panthers for the Canucks.
Spoosh
Leafs are really cleaning house. I fully expect Nonis to trade both Kessel and Phaneuf on monday and probably Reimer as well and start fresh next fall. Best thing that's happened in Toronto in a very, very long time. Nuxfanabroad
Columbus GM could probably flip Clarkson later, if he dipped into his stash of prospects, AND took back another dog. EG, to Edm: Clarkson & Wennberg. for: Pouliot/Nikitin & maybe a 2nd rounder. It's a creative way to end up saving about 15~20 mill, after both transactions. The 2 Cdn markets can recompense such foolish commitments.
TheCammer
That is some "out of the box" thinking. Kudos to Nonis on this one.
desiboynux4lifee*******
what a dumb move by Columbus. This is the dumbest move I have seen. WOW columbus no wonder that team is the bottom of the standings. Just a bonehead move. 5 million for Clarkson wow smh
NUCKER67
5 years ago this would've been a big trade. Like others have said, it looks like crap for crap. Good on Nonis for getting rid of Clarkson's contract, but Horton won't end up helping them either. I hope Clarkson puts up good numbers in Columbus lol
Robongo
&^@# Columbus seriously. They literally spent the entire summer crying about Johansen's salary and then they go and help the Leafs out of the worst contract in the NHL

Even if I have no beef with GMMG, it just seems fitting to say that Gillis would probably have dragged out the decision to make the trade for a year or two until he had solved the problem. Nonis got it "fixed" faster and swept it under the rug before it got messy.
Quantum
I wonder if the Leafs will flip Horton for Richards now...
SaveFerris
Toronto actually saves 1.4 million over the duration of the contract. And kudos to nhlnumbers.com for being on top of things.
Skirbs11
Columbus was Paying 5.3 for Horton to not play now they are paying the same money for someone to play even though it is not a high end player they are getting production atleast...Toronto was going to be paying that contract for the next few years now they get to put Horton on LTIR and use the cap hit else where, IMO give each team a need they were looking for and if by some miracle Horton recovers Toronto made the right move
Tangerines
Maybe we can pry Johanssen out of there while Jarmo is still drunk? Come home Ryan instead of wasting away in Ohio...
TOMapleLaughs
So....insuring a players contract against LT injury/retirement is optional for each NHL team? Really? The Leafs are the kinda team who would then I suppose. Way more "have" then the Jackets Surprised that's not a league wide policy though....It's strange that his contract wasn't insured. Don't think it was team option. Considering Horton's injury history prior to contract signing, it may have been difficult to secure insurance on it, period. So they went on the MLSE insurance plan. Now will they compliance buyout Clarkson? Perhaps.
