Here’s a name to keep an eye on as we get closer and closer to the collegiate free agent period:

Brandon Tanev.

If the surname’s familiar, that’s because Brandon — currently starring at Providence College — is the younger brother of Vancouver defenseman Chris Tanev, who himself was an undrafted college free agent from the Rochester Institute of Technology.

Per TSN, “as many as a dozen” NHL clubs have shown interest in the 24-year-old Brandon, who scored the game-winning goal in Providence’s win over Boston College in last year’s Frozen Four championship game.

This year, Brandon has eight goals and 18 points in 22 games, emerging as one of the Friars’ top scorers.

It’s not surprising clubs are keeping tabs on Brandon, given the success his older brother’s had at the NHL level.

After a brief stint at R.I.T, Chris emerged as one of Vancouver’s top blueliners and, last March, signed a five-year, $22.25 million extension with the club, one that will keep him with the Canucks through 2020

Wouldn't mind if we signed him...no risk in offering a college free agent. Probably would have the upper hand in signing him since we have his older brother, assuming he'd like the thought of joining him.

Turns out the Canucks had him at camp in 2011. http://video.canucks.nhl.com/videocenter/console?id=120452. Looks pretty small but that was 5 years ago lol. Now listed as 6'0", 180lbs so seems to have filled in nicely.

Here's bit of a scouting report on him from last year where he was invited to Bruins camp:

Quote

Brandon Tanev went undrafted at the NHL level — something the Tanev name is more than familiar with.

Like older brother Christopher, though, Brandon is looking to prove that may have been a poor choice on the part of all thirty NHL gm’s in each of his draft-eligible seasons.

23 year old Brandon is on the roster for the Boston Bruins’ development camp as an undrafted invitee, coming off a championship-winning season with the Providence College Friars of the NCAA’s Hockey East. With twenty-three points in thirty-nine regular season games — then a goal to push the Friars ahead of the powerhouse Boston University roster in the championship game — Tanev had an impressive third year in the NCAA; now, the Bruins are giving him a look.

Vancouver Canucks fans can attribute to the Tanev ‘late bloomer’ theory being true; older brother Christopher went undrafted for knocks against his size and ability to adapt to the NHL level, but has since become an integral part of the blue line for the Pacific Division club. Sure enough, that was why the Canucks reportedly failed to bring back the undrafted younger brother of their own blue liner in 2011 from development camp to prospect camp — described as ‘too tiny to have the impact of his older brother’, Brandon was sent back to the Surrey Eagles of the BCHL following a one year stint at the Canucks’ prospect camp before heading off to play in college.

Unlike his brother, though, Brandon won’t be playing on the blue line. He’s listed as a left wing by Providence College, where he’s been playing since 2012 — so he won’t be shouldering any back end weight should Boston decide they like what they see.

What he is, though, is a two-way forward. Part of the penalty kill for Providence during the regular season, Tanev knows how to capitalize on the puck finding its way to the blade of his stick without much thought about it. The 23 year old forward, who fell just short of .6 PPG at the collegiate level last season, finished his 2014-2015 campaign with three empty-netters and one short-handed marker on the year. That’s four goals when the other team had the man-advantage — and while only one involved standing down with the netminder, that’s still a testament to his ability to break through a play without any hesitancy.

What could be advantageous for the younger Tanev is his speed and his spark. Where older brother Christopher is considered cool and collected — something that earned him praise on Vancouver’s blue line from the moment he earned his spot with the club prior to the 2011 Stanley Cup Final — Brandon is a live wire. He’s got fast feet, and he’s easy to get worked up — which he’s honed and directed into something that benefits him in late-game moments with Providence, and could prove invaluable for the forward if he makes the transition to the pro game.

The biggest knock against him? Four years out of the game as a teen, due to being that much smaller than all the kids around him. He’s still no giant — where Christopher reached 6 foot 2 at full height, Brandon is still only 6 feet even — and he spent four years just playing roller hockey and trying to stay conditioned until he was able to work his way back into competitive hockey. That may speak volumes about his work ethic, but it takes more than just hard work to hack it in the NHL.

Home run signing. Chris Tanev has been one of our best signings in the last 20 years - if his brother has a similar temperament we should be in for him.

Replacement for Bartkowski? He shoots left too so we can have a Tanev-Tanev pairing.

He's a free D prospect, something we need, so I don't see why we shouldn't go after him.

He's a left winger.

Replacement for Shinkaruk in Utica.

A speedy spark plug LW might actually fit well in this team's system.   Drafted big, pwf RWs a few years running to fill a need.

Could be the next Burr.  Two way undrafted gem.

Hopefully Chris is in his ear about how great this franchise is and how sweet the west coast life is.

He reminds me of Matt Beleskey (similar size, solid work rate, hits despite being smaller and good shot).  Definitely wouldn't mind a take-charge guy like that, since the league's now about speed, smarts and determination of which he should have plenty.

Wouldn't mind another young prospect for free!  Hope there's an Ben Hutton available somewhere to sign though.

Don't see any reason why you don't offer him a 2 way deal and stick him in Utica. If he has even half the discipline of his brother he'd be a great add. Likely wouldn't Crack the roster for a good while but if he does, a Sedin, Sedin and Tanev, Tanev could only help sell tickets.

With scoring forwards, you know they have the IQ to handle the job (in most cases), but I look for the most is skating. From the highlight package, his skating isn't excellent but I think it's decent enough to take a flyer on him although we have plenty of scoring depth on LW. In other words, meh.
