Coconuts
Man, that's a nice deal for the Canucks. Low cost and low term, if he doesn't work out it's not going to hurt us. Even better considering Granlund's still a bit of a wild card. Haven't seen enough from him yet.
oldnews
Tempted to make a thread out of this question - is JB so bad with the cap? (but we have enough threads as it is). The vocal, critical crowd around here seems to think he's doing a poor job of cap management (citing the Sbisa and Dorsett deals all the time). But as I see - before the draft, free agency, or the summer trade market - and excluding the guys that are leaving in free agency - the team has the following depth: Sedin Sedin Hansen Baertschi Sutter Rodin Gaunce Horvat Etem Burrows Granlund Dorsett McCann Vey Virtanen (Higgins Zalewski Grenier) Edler Tanev [Hamhuis?] Hutton Sbisa Tryamkin Pedan Biega (Larsen Stecher Subban) Miller Markstrom They have 5 million / Vrbata, 2 / Prust, 1.75 / Bartkowski, 1.5 / Weber = 10.25 million clearing - and 14.5 if you include Hamhuis, depending on what happens with him. Sutter is going to make an extra million, and aside from him, only Baertschi stands to make as much more among this summer's re-ups. A couple million of cap added from within. So the team is sitting with more than a complete roster - with a significant amount of it in the form of ELCs and RFAs - and a large volume of disposable cap in addition, which could increase if they move another veteran (or two). At this point they don't really need to - Burrows and Higgins will expire next year - another 7 million and Miller representing another 6 million (Horvat, Hutton, Tryamkin..will be getting some of that from within). They are currently 5 viable forward lines deep, with a 6 of serviceable AHL callups - with no draft or FA additions. They are 7 D deep without Hamhuis, and not including Larsen - with no additions via free agency. The vast majority of those players are ELCs or RFAs. They are pretty healthy where the cap is concerned. They are healthy where youth/depth and flexibility is concerned. They can deal, assign, or waive a few players - or potentially move a few for picks - and still have free agency, the draft and the trade market to upgrade. This is exactly my feeling. I thought this once we traded Shink for Granlund. McCann has some pretty good value showing that he already performed decently at the NHL level at 19. Good skill but I never quite thought of him as a foundation piece. If we end up with 1OA and get Matthews (pleaseplease)I would consider him as good as gone. He is not 4th line material anyway, and no way he beats out Sedin/Sutter/Horvat in the near future. I could see him being traded for maybe a 14th-20th 1st round pick at the draft if there is a dman available that JB likes to a team that is short on the center prospects. Here's hoping anyway. After just the first year, with two to go. If he continues to improve, his value will exceed his contract for most of it.

Makes perfect sense, Benning is on something if he trades away McCANN, probably only prospect that has lots of potential, have you seen his passing game? ranked in the top in the draft with hockey iq, how much hockey iq does Granlund or Virtanen have? lol well its the Jim Benning show. Gaudette Celly
Most of our RFA's do not have a lot of leverage, and will sign for little over what they made last year, the exception being Baertschi. Thus, we will continue to have bigtime capspace available. Also notice that his contract is up a year after Bo's ELC expires next year.

No doubt I agree that he is a good skilled player, but unfortunately you have to give something good to get something good. Our defense needs some attention too, so this could be a way to go about it. I think that his future rests mostly on where we draft. Like I said, IF we end up with Matthews, could make McCann less necessary in our lineup
Mathew Barzal
Don't care for Granlund but that's a solid contract even if he doesn't pan out.

He showed what he had at camp, proving another year with SSM wasn't gonna do him any good. Utica was not an option. Canner is gonna kill it in Utica this year , and do the same with the Nucks a year after.
SaintPatrick33
Grandlund should excel at the PK, has good speed, can sift passes through in traffic. He seems to be very sound positionally He needs to work on his Faceoffs and build more strength for board play. I could see him getting 12-15 goals and 30 points in a full season, while becoming our new PK specialist.
