[Signing] Vasilevsky Extended

Recommended Posts

From Dan Milstein

Gold Star Hockey client Andrei Vasilevskiy has signed an 8-year extension with the Tampa Bay Lightning. He would like to thank great fans, ownership and management for making Tampa such a great place play and live for him and his family. #WeAreGoldStar!

Per Friedman

This will be a $9.5M AAV, with almost $45M in bonuses

what a year to be a Russian goalie.

Tampa has to move someone out for Point and also for 2 seasons from now when this monster contract kicks in. That extra 1st rounder will come in handy to move someone.....

He just turned 25 a few days ago so at least they've got him being young, but damn. That's a big contract.

Quick last won the cup 5.5 years ago.  He was 27.  I really question these big contracts for goalies.  But am happy we're only under a recapture from one for a few seasons

9.5M is not a steal for Tampa, but it is a fair contract whereas Bob was overpaid a bit.

It is when you take into account that he’s 25 and plays in a state with really low taxes.

9.5 is just a fair number for the player and Tampa that neither party should be upset with. If he signed for 8M then I'd consider that a steal.

He’s saying that Tampa can usually sign guys for a lot less because they have really low taxes. If he played here, Vasy would need 11.5+ to even come close to the same amount of money he earns there. It’s just brutal unless he can keep it up.

Teams in higher tax countries/states counter this with signing bonuses that hardly get taxed. Teams have evened the playing field when it comes to this.

In a hockey market like Van, players can also make up a fair chunk of that with more lucrative endorsement deals as well should they choose.

Dyu reckon their signing bonuses are less subject to income tax?

Maybe in Russia...

Research it. Signing bonuses hardly get taxed. It’s a loophole to a much lower tax bracket.
