Hello friends.

 

We have received our annual invite for the Mafia Championship!

 

For those unaware, every spring/summer MafiaUniverse hosts a tournament with every Mafia/Werewolf community it can find. Each community selects and sends a rep to play in a few rounds of Mafia and at the end of it a Champion is declared. It’s primarily a social event, and every year communities have a chance to meet and mingle and have fun together, but there’s the competitive edge to it as well that can make the later rounds of the tournament quite intense (in a fun way).

 

Season 9 (2022)

This year’s setup is pure ‘mountainous’, i.e. no power roles – just 12 Vanilla Town vs 3 Mafia.

There will be 135 reps in 9 qualifier games, and each game will vote through 2 players, with an impartial jury selecting a further 27 players from across all qualifier games.

Games will run across May and June, with many options open so that everyone can pick a date suitable to them.

 

Past tournaments

CDC has quietly performed better than nearly every other community with 4 finalists out of 7 years we’ve participated. Considering we’re a hockey forum and not one of the hardcore Mafia forums, we are punching well above our weight.

More importantly, we are one of the best communities for memes. In each of the last three seasons, our rep has become one of the best memes of the year, from 112’s dead cat 'Benson' (Season 6) to KZA’s avatar (Season 7) to Blue Jay’s inevitable hammering (Season 8). All three are still remembered fondly in the Champs spec chat (which is where dozens of people gather to watch the games and comment and judge and have fun).

Having been a part of it myself in several ways (player, juror, spectator) I’m obviously biased, but IMO this is a really fun event. Spec chat is lots of fun and the quality of play is top notch (at least in the semifinals/finale…the qualifiers can vary a bit.)

So far on our CDC Mafia Discord (which is a thing, if you’re not aware) we’ve nominated Falcon45ca and…well, no one else. I think we’re all happy with him being our rep, but out of fairness we could open this up to anyone else who wants to put their (or someone else’s) name forward as well.

 

We also will want to elect a backup in case our main rep has to drop. (Also, every year a few people from other communities flake on their game, and ‘universal subs’ are needed; the organisers ask backups from other communities (assuming their own rep has already played their game) to step in. So the backup has a shot at playing as well, if this happens and the organisers need someone on short notice.)

 

 

Just be aware that games tend to be very active. The average ‘qualifier’ game last year was 4000+ posts, and the Finale game was nearly 10,500+. If you want a glance at what to expect, here is BJ's qualifier game from last year. (Featuring, incidentally, the eventual Champion and 2nd place. This is another running theme of CDC reps - they always end up in the really high-quality 'qualifier' games that produce eventual Champs and other finalists.)

Wtf people that don’t even play on CDC choosing who represents CDC is an outrage!!

 

I totally think @falcon45ca would be a great rep but the sheer fact that that fat sob @Beluga Whale had a hand in that decision is, like I stated, completely outrageous!!
