Bonino became Sutter who was usless, Sbisa was a plug,  traded the Mccann for another plug defenceman.

Okay? That doesn't change that when we traded Kesler we got a pretty decent return for him. 2 NHL players and a 1st and third.. That is a solid return for a player that really only wanted to go to one team.

One of those players can be signed with OEL and JB likely wants that to be Markstrom. Friday comes and FA hits and we haven't gotten OEL then Tanev and Toffoli can be negotiated with like any other team can talk to them.. it's not a big deal. If someone offers them a big contract you let them walk. Boston is a true contending team and if they lose both OEL and Krug there isn't much to replace those guys for them.. They need one or the other.

usually tho when you let your guys go to free agency you don't sign them, at least historically.

but thats all Boston has to worry about. Jim has 3 UFAs and cap to clear too. If Jim waits until Friday morning, he may lose all 3 of his UFAs and not get OEL either. The Canucks are in the more complicated scenario by far on this. We need AZ, or someone, to take cap for this to work for us. Thats not going to happen Friday morning in free agency.

My preference would be for Jim to tell AZ end of the day today or he moves on. OEL would be a nice get, but we have many other options, but we burn some of those by waiting until Friday morning.

I just posted this but it’s addressed to the bolder part of your statement.

The Friday deadline is fine.  Benning can have all the paperwork on TT, CT & JM ready to go and in hand but also let those agents know whether he’s going to sign those papers, or not, prior to free agency opening on Friday.  Meanwhile, the player agents will already have been working on their clients’ “plan B” options.  That’s literally a player agent’s job.

With that statement if Boston let's Krug go to FA he is gone. So really they have between now and Friday to decide if they want Krug or OEL and judging by how long they've prolonged this I'd say they want Krug more.

Hey @Provost

THIS is a deadline.
see the difference?
Today, the huge deadline you keep talking about is unimportant.
Friday is a real deadline according to the people involved.

Provost is some pretentious schmuck that's getting royally exposed right now for what he is. He has no business talking about how people should negotiate.

what we don't have knowledge of is who Jim has already decided to let walk. Maybe Tanev isn't in is plans at all, e.g. and he can afford to play the waiting game until Friday.

If nothing else, it makes for a fun week

certainly could be the case. IMO they gave him a very good offer already, I just don't see many teams offering more.

It would be funny if we ended up with Krug and Boston with OEL.

Exactly.  This is an entertainment industry and trade speculation is a large part of that entertainment.

It seems like Boston is OELs first choice in this, otherwise he's set the date earlier to allow the Canuck to clear cap. Taking it to Friday morning gives Boston an advantage.

I dunno seems like Benning could use a couple extra days to clear cap too.

At the end of the day if they like Boston’s package better and they can’t re-sign Krug he’s probably going to Boston.

Don’t forget, after it’s resolved one way or another there will be another thread with a few hundred pages praising or second guessing Benning lol

moj is buddies with OEL agent

I was talking about Walker, I understand the rumour Moj is friends with Virtanen and OEL's agent. But, radio stations get numerous insiders, agents, managers etc etc. Highly unlikely the people who talk on air are always friends with those people.

and also shipping him out of the conference, which they would do if the value is equivalent or close in trade offers.

Arizona has put themselves in cap hell with players like Phil Kessel (buyout proof, although it would be funny to see them do it and have it cost Toronto another 1.1 million), they have a LOT of work to do to ice a full lineup next season. Have heard rumors that they may be shooting for an internal spend of around 70 million. Stephan isn't making things any better for them either with generally under performing. No one would take his contract either.

They may not have a choice but to do this trade, and as they are a team that is going to be really struggling with income for the next year or two, they may accept something like:

To Vancouver:

OEL

2021 5th

To Arizona:

Sutter

Benn

Stecher

Brisbois

2021 1st round pick

2022 3rd round pick

Not sure that Arizona would be happy with that, but they may not have a choice as most of the other larger contracts on their team, would be REALLY hard to move and not many are structured where they would save anything buying them out.

When they are over the barrel you would offer that!

why lead with Sutter when there is a strong chance for LE especially when AZ are looking for real cash savings.

That is OELs final deadline... that isn’t the only deadline.  That isn’t all the parties involved.

Us missing the draft, the RFA qualifying deadline, and signing our UFAs before free agency makes it a drastically harder deal to make on our end.  We will have had to make most of our other roster decisions before then.

If you can’t see that the ability to make other deals is impacted drastically once the the draft is done... you just can’t see that.  It is either obvious or it is beyond your ken.  Draft picks are one of the biggest currencies traded at this time of year... either incoming our outgoing.

I'd rather us try to sign Pietrangelo for a shorter term / similar money (6 x 7.5 mil?) without giving up assets. We really need another RH option on defense. Hopefully this is Benning's plan B if this doesn't go through.

Petro already turned down 8x8m from the blues.
