OEL at 7.25 is a bit steep but I still think he brings a ton to this team. While the offense doesn’t appear to be there anymore his defensive game is still really solid. He balances out our D core really nicely.

.

A 7.25 D-man is not just a bit steep considering elite dmen like Victor Hedman and John Carlson are making only less than Millon more than OEL and Pietrangelo is making roughly 1.6 more.

With OEL's price tag you expect a better level of offensive production. Otherwise if the Canucks wanted a dman that is good defensively but limited offensive production they should just have kept Tanev

Yeah, that's nonsense. Just like the much poo-pooed at the time Miller trade, you always add value to your franchise when the opportunity arises.

Miller is worth more now than what we paid and we should take advantage of that given circumstances.

We could also trade Garland for more than what we paid and OEL is just fine even if his cap hit is $500k more than preferred/ideal. All while clearing inefficient to dead cap.

This team certainly has issues, but Garland and OEL aren't one of them.

OEL is a cap issue, no?

Yeah. And at 4/4.5 that would have been a better deal for a defensive defenseman than OEL at 7.25M.

I don't disagree that OEL's price tag is steep for what he is currently bringing as he's basically a defensive defenceman right now.  However, when we talk cap, a 750k or 1.6M difference is significant.  In other words, if you could sign JT Miller for 7.25M over 8 years vs 8M over 8 years, how would you feel about that 750k difference?

Or even more significant, if you could sign JT Miller for 7.25M instead of 9M ...

Meh, not really. Eventual cap minor inconvenience maybe?

D, unlike forwards tend to be productive until 34. Look at how well Edler played for us at 35, and OEL is a MUCH better skater. At worst, we likely have a year or so where he is a minor problem at the end there. And by then, that's probably getting near second pair money, which he arguably will still play at, anyway.

His contract also expires at the same time as Hughes, so it causes no barrier there.

And we DESPERATELY need top 4 D, so I really don't get what all the fuss is about personally.

Garland was a great acquisition. He plays exactly the style that we want this team to play.

He’s third on our team in scoring and still only 25 so he’s just entering his prime. Oh and did I mention he’s on a fantastic contract?

OEL at 7.25 is a bit steep but I still think he brings a ton to this team. While the offense doesn’t appear to be there anymore his defensive game is still really solid. He balances out our D core really nicely.

We’re not gonna have anyone coming up to replace what he brings for awhile. He’s a big part of our league leading 5 on 5 goals against. Important to have vets like him to help ease in young D so they’re not being set up to fail.

While trading Garland now might be a possibility, if the return was good enough, Rutherford has the luxury of waiting into the future. Like you said he hasn't peaked yet.

He's a 7.25 hit on pace for 17 points, he's 30 and has 6 years left.  This is undoubtedly one of the worst contracts in the league right now and it can't really be debated.  Guys with good fancy stats and that keep pucks out of the net make 2.5 - 5 and put up the same offensive numbers or better.

Can’t imagine where the Canucks would be without OEL. He’s been nothing short of spectacular defensively.

You don't bring in 7+ million dollar players to be spectacular defensively.  You could resign Tanev to do that and still have a huge chunk of money left over

As of right now OEL has been a disappointment.

Yeah in a world w/o a salary cap OEL would be great unfortunately Benning tried to live in a world where salary cap didn't matter

Not sure about that.

OEL is stellar. A true 1D. He shows up for very hard minutes.

HUGHES, DEMKO, OEL is a hell of a lot better than HUGHES, DEMKO, and pretty much anyone else available for reasonable price and free agency.

Boudreau’s got it. We’re making the playoffs.

IMO a lot of OEL's "offensive production problems" are actually Canuck problems, not OEL problems.

Hughes ahead of him taking up a lot of offensive opportunity and no credible defensive Ds to take up key defensive responsibility. He's been deployed more defensively.

Need a RD that can help offensively and another one that can help defensively. If said Ds could do both that would be great(Nemec/Jiricek pipedream).

Myers has been good possessionally(in particular moving the puck out of the D-zone) but his offensive ability is limited. He's also been used defensively more so as well.

As a result both D are having off-years in offensive-production but mainly due to roster circumstances. We don't have anyone better to handle those tough minutes.

Exactly.

Playing behind Hughes I expected he'd drop production. But our D is such a mish-mash of incongruent parts that as you stated, he's left playing a far more defensive role than he would be required to, on a better built D. With both nobody to share some of those hard minutes/assignments and nobody offensive to play with to help increase his offensive production.

Add to that that Pettersson and Boeser (and to some extent, Horvat) haven't exactly been lighting the lamp this season, so where's he going to get apples from? It's not like this team is scoring the wheels off here.

It's also his first year on a new team (with two new coaches no less) and a TONNE of upheaval in the organization.

IMO, if new management can start addressing the D construction and get the forwards scoring more again, we'll see his number rebound big time in the next couple seasons.

Canuck problem, not an OEL problem.
