[Proposal] 2 trades, Van - Edm and Van - NYR

Recommended Posts

Trade #1

To Edm: Halak

To Van: RNH

Oilers do this because it gives them the help in net they desperately need and saves them some cap to get help on D

Canucks do this because RNH can help replace the offense they will lose when they trade MIller for same cap hit, also signed through the rest of his prime.

Trade #2

To NYR: MIller

To Van: Schnieder, Kravstov, 1st

NYR does this because they get a player who will help them contend for the next 2 playoffs at a good cap hit and move on from a disgruntled prospect and well you have to give to get and Miller wont be had for cheap.

Van does this for the futures involved.

Flame away!

Why does Edmonton trade RNH for a pending UFA who's over 35 though?  With the contract he signed they basically included him in the core of their team, it's not like the Oilers can just sign a mystical UFA with the freed up cap space, when it probably makes more sense for them to trade Nuge for some value which includes that defenseman, and then they trade a pick they acquired for Halak.  The whole first trade just seems weird IMO.

to try and save their season and keep McDavid happy, what other G is available that could help them?

Depth scoring is an issue in Edmonton. RNH is 3rd in Team scoring for them. I don’t see them touching this with a 10’ pole. Halak doesn’t have remotely that much value, especially considering he comes with $1.25m in dead cap space next season.

Fair enough but Oilers need help in net and on D in a bad way and no one is going to help them for cheap, they have to trade a forward and not have salary come back. Even with the dead cap there they still come out ahead cap wise. How do they solve their issues without trading a forward?

If they’re moving someone of RNH quality who is signed with term to a reasonable deal they’re getting a better return than a half season from a 36 year old goalie who comes with dead cap space to boot.  They can go after a guy like Swayman or Ulmark out of Boston. Even if they are desperate enough to do a deal like you suggest they could go after Fleury

Exactly.  OP, I'm not the most well-versed in Edmonton's blue-line but I know that Boston could really use a 2nd line C since Krejci went back to Czech Republic (Coyle isn't cutting it and they've been trying Haula there).  Edmonton should target either Ullmark or Swayman, plus one of Grzelcyk/ Forbort (3rd pair on even strength but 1st pair PK LD) or a younger D like Vaakanainen or Zboril, who could help on their defensive end.  Not just a pending UFA in Halak.

They should be all over Fleury.  Have Chicago retain $2.5 million and send Koskinen the other way.  Not sure what they would have to give up though for Fleury.

It's more likely than Halak imo

They're both on expiring contracts and Chicago doesn't have much of a playoff chance, Edmonton is still in the mix despite their slide

They've got games in hand still too

Does he want to stay there though lol

I would hate to be RNH stuck in Edmonton once McDavid and Drais request trades lol

Well did Edler or the Sedins or anyone else until it was way past the writing on the wall want to leave Vancouver?   Not really.   Bieksa was the only one who had a few years left in him .... Hansen and Burrows were all but done.   Yes his NMC matters to him, otherwise he never would have signed it.  McDavid will end up in TO.  Not sure where Drasaitl will.
