[Rumour] Jeff Petry has demanded trade, GM Hughes open to moving him

Recommended Posts

Petry’s family is in Michigan where the COVID restrictions are far less than Quebec.  There’s rumours that Petry HATES playing for Ducharme.  As unhappy as he is he’ll likely have to suck it up and wait until the offseason to get moved.  His contract and term makes it tough to move him mid season.  He’s been one of the top offensive D the last few years.  They’ll likely find a taker for him but it’ll probably require some retention on Montreal’s end.

Why would Arizona have any interest in him? Not exactly the player profile a rebuilding team pursues

Because they have let it be known that they are willing to continue taking on bad money this season. They have 7+ in cap space to do so as well

Montreal’s not a contender,  they’re not going to pay premium assets to clear his contract.  Arizona might act as an intermediary for retaining salary to another team. But even then is contract is longer than the ones they’ve been taking on.

I guess we’ll see. What you describe is definitely an option. I just dont see MTL ownership wanting to pay Petry that much for remaining term if they are going to blow things up.

Petry was playing behind Weber.  Without Weber he became the de-facto top D.  They didn't have reliable goaltending without Price and a lot of their players struggled this season.

Petry has also openly criticised Ducharme's system.  Friedman in his 32 Thoughts believes Montreal could find a trade partner in the off-season.

6. A few teams indicated they see Jeff Petry more likely as an off-season deal as opposed to this deadline, although those predictions certainly could backfire. One thing to remember: as ugly as this season’s been for him — and the Canadiens — his underlying numbers last year were very good. And that hasn’t gone unnoticed.

MTL is going to need D

to MTL: Myers

to VAN: Toffoli and (LD) Kaiden Guhle

clears a bit of cap

Nope.
Much rather have Myers.
This team is already full

of kittens.    Why get rid of the only one who isn’t scared of the opponents?

who tf is gonna trade for him though

Friedman believes there will be teams interested despite his play this year. His underlining numbers from the past few years when he wasn’t expected to be the #1 D were extremely good.  He’ll likely be an offseason trade candidate though

Sorry Jeff, you wanted all the money and now you suck. No team will want that contract.

Yeah that's going to be a tough contract to move, unless they retain some $. Petry has been a very serviceable defenseman who had 4 -40+ point seasons in a row but is having a terrible year (as is the rest of that team). MTL might move him for a mid round pick just to dump the salary.
