But at the same time, I think we all saw this coming the day Sportsnet got the rights to the draft. Say what you want about the TSN personalities but they are far, far better than anyone on SNET. Production-wise, analysis-wise, story-telling with regards to kids' backgrounds, etc. Millard - I don't necessarily "dislike" him but he was having trouble speaking during the draft -- a bit of an issue for a broadcaster. His speech just didn't flow naturally. Just listen to him try to tell the back-story for Brock Boeser. Cosentino - His main job is to be a subpar junior hockey colour commentator. He's not garbage but I don't think he's good. He does less analyzing during his games and more talking about how great a kid is, as well as other things not entirely relevant to the plays during the game. I'd say he's the "most qualified" to talk about the draft prospects because he actually watches a handful of these kids... but that doesn't mean much considering his team. Cox - Here's the thing about Cox. I thought his rankings were actually pretty decent -- and maybe that's just the result of having super low expectations going in. People have opinions on the guy's opinions but at least it gave the impression that he had done his homework. That being said, he's not a scout or a talent-evaluator with any sort of legitimate credibility so, like Cosentino, nothing he says sounds super-informed. Cox does a lot of hockey-related stuff but he is still a multi-sports writer. I don't mean to discriminate, but I think we'd all prefer to hear from someone who is invested into hockey 110% -- McKenzie, Button, and McGuire are all HOCKEY people. Johnson - I think he's a subpar-to-okay colour guy but, man, he was out of place during the broadcast. It was clear as day that he didn't know much about the prospects. He never sounded really sure of himself when giving the scouting report or projections for the players. Say what you will about Craig Button, at least the guy talks with a ton of passion and conviction. From a general broadcast point of view, I thought their cameras were sometimes really, really bad. The Jake DeBrusk one in particular was absolutely dreadful. They had a bright light shining straight into the camera and they stayed on that shot for a relatively lengthy amount of time. Leaving older players like Burrows, Dorsett and Hansen out of the discussion, we still have Kassian, Virtanen, Grenier and Jensen. We are deeper at RW than any other position, even C. Jensen and Kassian are both in different ways out of favor with the front office. They've commented publicly about their issues with them. Clearly not the building blocks going forward. Jensen looks just as likely to never make it as he is too make it at best. Virtanen and Jensen can also both play LW. And there's a very easy case to make that Virtanen is better on the left side. Drafting by position is how you end up with no NHL talent in your system. To be a successful franchise long term taking the BPA is an absolute must. Not everyone makes it, players get traded, team needs change, and lots of players can change position. Drafting for positions is not only dumb, it's self destructive. I just watched it and jotted down his quick points during the scouting report. Expresses he still has more room to fill out in his already solid frame. Very good skater. Long and powerful strides leave him capable of creating separation. Quality edge work leaves him very agile for his size. Prefers to play a straightforward north-south game. Similar to Virtanen (I see you Benning, I see you) He still displays quality vision to make quality passes down low, especially in the cycle. (Hello Sedins) Puck skills are fairly average. If given space and time, he can make quality passes, but his hands haven't caught up to his legs yet. Not bad, but average. This is an area he thinks he can work on to be more dominant over more seasons. His defining skill is goalscoring. Possesses the heavy shot, quick and accurate release that natural goal scorers posses, but the part that sets him apart is his ability to quickly and effectively get himself into the most dangerous areas of the ice. Posseses really good offensive IQ and instincts. Excels at the little things such as stick lifts at the right time, or net front presence. Defends the puck very well against defenders. He utilizes his 6'1, 190+ pound frame create a wide stance where it's really tough to strip the puck, especially when he's moving at quick speeds. Improved a lot this season when it comes to his play away from the puck. He became much more defensively conscious and a two way threat this year through positioning. Earned time on the penalty kill as the season went on. Still, this is an area he can improve more on to catch up with the rest of his game. Much like his puck skills, not bad, just nothing spectacular. Still shows potential to be a significant two way threat if he continues to work. Boeser was a rookie this year, but blew his teammates out of the water. His 35 goals, and 68 points in 57 games lead his team by wide margin. Outscoring the next top offensive player by 20 goals and 20 points. (Now the commentator doesn't say this, but from my personal interpretation, that means the man was doing it all himself. Those points you see are not inflated, at all. That's all him. These numbers also put him 3rd in the league in scoring. All of this is, VERY impressive especially for a rookie.) Captained the team USA U18 team. Scored 6 goals and 8 points in 5 games. (You see? put him with some skilled players and look at the result. The USA team went on to win the bronze medal.) Many of his points came from the Powerplay, which should be noted, making him somewhat of a PP specialist. As the season went on however, he scored more and more on even strength, which is encouraging to see. The commentator goes on to specifically say it's not much of a knock considering the number of chances he makes. The team just struggles to bury them. Committed to playing at the University of North Dakota. Commentator goes on to specify that because of the NCAA schedule, players like him have much more time to work on individual puck skills, and adding muscle in the weight room. (THIS IS VERY ENCOURAGING TO SEE considering one major knock on him was his average puck skills, as well as him most likely being able to completely fill out in a ear or 2. We could easily see Boeser hit 200+ pounds which will go a long way in the NHL.) Commentator also notes that it is more than likely we will see him in the NHL sooner rather than later as he is so far ahead of most of his peers, mentally and physically. (sounds a little like Bo to me, fantastic) Overall, at 23, I think we got as close to a home run pick as we could have gotten. I'm pumped to see what he can do on the NHL level. I think he ranked higher on teams' lists than central scouting because he was one of the best RWers, and the Dmen went a bit later.
